Can someone shed some light on this idea that Newton is dumb?

Recommended Posts

after reading this thread I have come to the conclusion that I either haven't heard Cam Newton talk enough because I have never listened to him and gone "there goes where he was raised making him sound likes a dumbass!"

George Bush used to smoke crack in college.....I don't care what Cam did. We've all done dumb poo at one point in our life, that doesn't make you dumb. Pacman Jones is dumb....Cam isn't dumb. He might not be Hawking, but if isn't an idiot.

I think this post just made me dumb.

he knew it was stolen so he tossed it out a window to try to avoid being caught with it is my take. I did a bit of reading about this because originally I didn't believe he knew it was stolen and thought he was just freaking out that the cops were beating at his door or something, but...

What happened (according, admittedly, to Florida people) was someone was downloading illegal items (songs etc) with the computer after it was stolen from some other undergraduate. The owner of the computer got a warning via the campus IT people that his internet access was being suspended for downloading MP3s and poo. So he told them hell I don't have my computer it must be someone on campus. They traced the internet connection back and checked the logs, finding out that someone named Cam Newton was logging in to the campus internet with the computer.

The police wrote down the serial # on a piece of paper and went to investigate. In Cam's room they found a laptop of the make and model of the stolen version. They asked Cam about it. He let them see it. They checked the serial #, and found out it was not the # that they had written on a piece of paper. So they wrote down the # of Cam's, then left.

When they double checked the number it turned out that the cops had transcribed the number wrong from the original report of what was stolen. The actual number matched what they had written from Cam's room. Cam tossed the thing out a window and then had a friend dispose of it. The friend texted Cam about it, which the police ended up reading when they his cell phone.

Cam later completed a pretrial program to avoid a sentence that would have destroyed his life. Since Florida, it truly appears he's been on the straight and narrow. I do think he has turned his life around and I am glad for it, because he's a Panther now.

As to the topic, Cam undoubtedly receives hate because of racism, but it is too easy to fall into the hole of thinking anyone who has a criticism of Cam Newton is a racist...

I agree it appears that Cam has learned from that incident and avoided trouble. However my point still stands. He threw the laptop out the window AFTER the cops had the serial number. IMO that is stupid, not immature.

It certainly shows poor judgment. I wasn't intending to say you were wrong, just expanding on what happened. I think it was a stupid action but I don't think it means he is too stupid to play in the NFL or anything like that (which I am not saying you think).

Cam has a very hard time with using the proper verb tense when speaking.

Emmitt Smith was similar.

To me, that has helped put the 'dumb' label on him, deserved or not.

man, I must be watching the wrong stuff. I just don't get the "Emmit Smith" feel from him either. I dunno, I'll go watch more of his interviews and see if I can catch it but I just didn't get the "Man what the hell, did this guy even get through middle school english?" feel from Cam at all like I did with Emmit. Oh god, Emmit. :( lol

Yeah I understand your point. I agree, I don't feel he is stupid. But I don't understand how people (not you) excuse it by saying he was just young and immature. I believe a stupid action is a stupid action, age doesn't make it less stupid.

...don't get me wrong, I like the young man a great deal; but, he would really benefit from working on those verbal skills a bit...starting with the difference beween the use of was and were.

He has it all...good speaking skills can do nothing but help his ability to be respected as he should be in business and that is what he is...an icon (yes I said it, for the Panthers). The Panthers have been on National TV more since the kid was drafted than ever before.

In general, I agree with what you mean. I just found Emmit Smith hard to listen to at times; haven't had that problem with Cam. It could help his image if he worked on his verbal skills but there are others who might have less favorable words for the idea of him "changing" in that way.
