Can someone shed some light on this idea that Newton is dumb?

Recommended Posts

I wasnt aware I had an argument as of yet. Merely trying to understand your stance. Perhaps after I fully understand your stance I will have an argument.

Can you give me one example of a black player who had character/intelligence questions/concerns which was also not about race? Can you give me one example of a white player who's questions/concerns about character/intelligence was about race?

Exactly.

All black QBs that come into the league with a lot of hype and fanfare are stereotyped as "dumb" or lacking something mental. Every single one's intelligence gets questioned. A lot of people buy into the notion that your intelligence is relative to your skin tone to reaffirm their own pride and sense of IQ in their heritage. The flip side is, we get to assume all the other QBs are "bright" and "naturally smart" and not feel guilty about it. LOL. The sad thing is, 99% of the people who question people's intelligence arent very bright or successful themselves.

Most of the negative reaction to Newt has been panic and fear related, which is never a good combo IMO.

For everyone who points out that there is no stigma that black quarterbacks are stereotyped as dumb, and immediately brings up the name of Ryan Mallett as the one example, the bright , shining, smoking gun of evidence that just as many white QBs get this treatment as well - doesn't it seem a bit ironic that Mallett has been accused more than once of "talking and acting like he's black"?

Do you really think so?

You mean the proper King's english. I don't think so I know so. We speak an Americanized english language that has evolved by the people here in the US. Sorta like in different parts of the US people speak different versions of even the Americanized English language. Like for instance Atlanta, where my entire family heritage is from. I grew up in NC but the rest of my family history is in Atlanta and my relatives speak an entirely different language than myself.

That is why I call you an ass instead of an arse. ;)

The exact same questions/concerns were raised about Ryan Mallett. Please explain to me, in your opinion, what role race factors in there?

LOL. The ol' "White guy wuz hated on too therefore race no matter!!1!!111" For the 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 time saying race plays a part in the perception of a QB does not mean it is a criticism ONLY attributed to black QBs . It means that black QBs inherently have to do more to prove their intelligence than a white QB does.

That is why it is a perceived slight to say a black person is articulate. It is indeed a compliment but many times people look at it as if you are saying "Wow. You are black, I totally didn't expect you to be well spoken. Congratulations!!"

Yeah Ryan Mallet was questioned about his intelligence. Does anyone remember the criticism that leaked saying he had too mush street in his voice?? In other words he sounded a little too black for some GMs liking, therefore he must be dumb.

Meanwhile, last year Colt McCoy who also scored an average wonderlic score and sounds like a country bumpkin; rarely if ever had his intelligence questioned and when he did it wasn't even close to the amount of verocity as Cam Newton has been. So please stop acting like this is all in people's heads. It may not be true but it is completely appropriate to pose the question.

Whoever said its the way he speaks is dead on imo

I think in front of the camera he along with countless other players just has a hard time expressing his thoughts to the level of what some people expect. They want some stout oober professional sounding QB to the likes of a Brady. This scares people...stupid people.

The thing is that in his radio call ins and interviews since he's been signed, he sounds actually pretty smart. He jokes around a lot, missteps occasionally on his vocab, but you can follow his train of thought, he means well, and understands the game. Its not like Auburn and Florida are nonsense schools. He got a decent education and clearly seems capable. The pre-draft media frenzy tried to develop him into a particular character and it didn't work with me, a lot here seemed to fall for it.

I wasn't initially for him, but this type of sh*t wasn't a reason.

And making juvenile decisions when you're 18-19 doesn't mean your stupid, it makes you young and naive with plenty of room to grow and mature which it seems he's done from Blinn to Auburn to the NFL.

This is a stupid discussion

he stole another student's paper and turned it in and then purchased another paper off the internet and turned it in. i'm not saying he's "dumb" but i don't know any smart people that have done that.

okay, i take it back. that poo is dumb.

So that is a fact? I ask, because I haven't seen any evidence at all about the cheating thing, except that he was accused of cheating.

The notion that any negative opinion expressed about him must be rooted in racism is as ignorant and racist itself as anything I've seen said about Newton. Ryan Mallett and Jimmy Clausen have plenty of negative discussion too but nobody suggests that those who engage in such do so because they hate white people.

This thread is about Cam Newton's intelligence. No one wonders whether Jimmy Clausen is intelligent. The only concerns about Ryan Mallet's intelligence is that he "talks like a ******." But I guess it technically isn't bigotry if you hate it when black people talk like black people AND when white people do it.

Again, people think Mallett is dumb because of how he talks. And how does he talk? Like a "thug!!!"

So yeah, it actually does go back to people assuming a black person is dumb because he doesn't speak like WEB Dubois.

actually the questions about ryan mallett's intelligence went much deeper than the way he talked. it was how he acted around coaches and other students. It was things he said and ways he acted. He just didn't present himself well at all.
