Jake Delhomme as a GM

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Maybe not right off the bat but personally I would love to see Jake back with the Panthers in some front office capacity once he retires from football. I don't know about GM right away but if he had some front office time for experience, down the road that would be something I could see happening.

It doesn't matter if it impresses you or not, no offense. Cam newton was a huge gamble at qb. If he hits a homerun with him as the first overall pick hurney is guaranteed an extension.

having the #1 overall pick in the NFL draft and selecting someone who is good......again, isn't actually impressive. At least to me that isn't impressive.

I would say Hurney has been middle of the road at best in rounds 2-7.

So what I read is that Hurney and Jake are both stand up guys who make great employees and are the kind of person you want working for you or for whom you would want to work for as well. He engenders loyalty and is popular. he occasionally does some great things and when he screws up, he takes responsibility for the problem.

Somehow I don't get the problem here. All GMs screw up and make mistakes. When you compare for example the number of draft picks we have as starters or contributors on the team over the past 3 years it favorably compares to every other team in our division. Hurney is a gambler which sometimes makes him high risk and high reward as well. People who disliked us picking Newton will dislike Hurney for the same reason. Those who liked the pick and are willing to spin the wheel like Hurney as well. I think he does a decent job especially for example combing the scrap pile and throw aways for low priced gems. He is great in the sixth round for example. Too bad he can't do the same in the second. You take the good with the bad.

only difference is the record over the last couple years hasn't been comparable.

When you cut vets and don't sign any FA's worth a poo 2 years in a row, it is hard not to have young draft picks as starters. It also leads to 2-14

If Hurney was going to be let go, he would've went with Fox. Hurney is probably going to be here for a while. As far as Jake, a coaching position maybe, but he's no GM. Mr.Scot I hope you did'nt hurt your elbow, the huddle mob might rise up and demand your replacement lol.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
