Lockout almost over says newspaper source...

sorry folks.... that report jumped the gun.

Contrary to report, lockout isn't over by Aaron Wilson

June 10, 02011

Both the NFL and the NFL Players Association have emphatically shot down a report from a small Massachusetts newspaper stating that the lockout was over.

“There’s a report that the lockout is over," NFL PLayers Association spokesman George Atallah wrote on his Twitter account. "Umm. .. no."

“Joint NFL-NFLPA-Yogi Berra Statement: ‘It’s not over till it’s over," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello wrote on his Twitter account.

The report from Bill Burt, Lawrence-Eagle Tribune sports editor, stated that "A deal to end the National Football League's lockout is almost complete, according to an NFL source. According to the source, owners and players were close to an agreement today to end the lockout, Some coaches and players have been contacted about returning to work probably early next week and possibly as soon as this weekend."

While meetings did take place in Chicago last week and Long Island this week, NFL sources confirm that no deal is imminent.

but, things are looking better...

In another very hopeful sign for the NFL's labor dispute, sources confirmed to The Post that league commissioner Roger Goodell and union chief DeMaurice Smith met for a private dinner lasting nearly two hours Wednesday night at a Midtown restaurant.

The secret and highly unusual sit-down came at Patroon just hours after the two leaders were involved in another round of closed-door talks between negotiating parties on Long Island.

Those talks, combined with what a witness said was "a very jovial dinner" between Goodell and Smith, are prompting optimism that the league's three-month labor dispute could soon end before any games or training-camp time are lost.

A league spokesman declined comment on the private dinner. The decertified union did not respond to messages.

btw...who uses the word "jovial" anymore? i guess we just found out.

anyway, brandt's take...

adbrandt "Jovial" dinner of Roger Goodell/De Smith, as per @NYPost_Hubbuch, welcome news. No deal happens without increased trust there.

Part of me enjoys that money staying in my checking accout, the other part of me wants it over as for some of the games, have to make hotel reservations, and a couple of my friends will be flying down for a game or two.

Makes it real hard to plan anything with this stuff dragging on.

For those of us who play FF (and I know there are people who hate it) it is tough to not know what to do with drafts and such. How dare the NFL screw all of this up (facetious)

More promising news...

'According to the SportsBusiness Journal's Daniel Kaplan, a "framework agreement" could be reached in the NFL's labor dispute in as little as two weeks.'

yeah, i got a tweet from kaplan saying that. this dude is legit. very promising.

also saw this from brandt...

adbrandt NFL-NFLPA optimism realization of no more Courtroom football on horizon, pending economic harm to both sides. Time now a factor.

doug farrar had an article on yahoo news this morning along the same theme of optimism. talked about the statement made in the OP saying that the lockout was over and how that was shutdown quickly, but things are still looking up. not sure if it's lazy journalism, but he quoted a couple other articles with some insight...

Lance Zierlein of the Houston Chronicle recently put up a blog post entitled "According to a couple of sources, NFL lockout could be over sooner than you think" in which he quotes two NFL people he knows. I've known Lance for while, and I know how dialed-in he is, so I'm of a mind to take this seriously. The post said, in part…

Eric Edholm from Pro Football Weekly is another news source to be taken seriously; PFW isn't exactly in the habit of floating false rumors to get traction on the interwebs. Eric's recent piece was interesting in a different way, because he pointed to a specific date by which both sides might be encouraged to get a deal done:

    • LOL, I tried to do this also....But I never found enough to make a guess.
    • gosh no one cares about the OGs...   Id list hunt here too, if not for missing 95% of the season.   Best I can say, Tri Turner was the best OG in panthers history if you factor in career length. Wharton was super solid, but never elite. Norwell while having a 1st all-pro, only played 2.5 starting years.    If lewis stays on the panthers and keeps his play lvl at 2025, his path is right there and easy. In 2028 he could be the best OG in panthers history.    Dang if panthers or NFL don't have long great careers.....its sooo rare.
    • All true, Stafford and Mccvay were both talking about "retiring" during those future picks too, I member. In my computer when you make future trade, I feel you have to factor in the worst case or close to it from your side. The big issue for the panthers, maybe even now is that they have not proven they can draft well enough to trade. I know that Dan and company have not traded future picks and they seem to always want 7-8 picks overall. They like to trade 3 picks for 3 picks or 2 for 2.   It would have been great to flip BB for that haul and use those Rams picks instead of the first overall pick...... Verse wise, Jesus what a beast....... Garrett is the top dawg and all, but man this is rough for me. I also noticed this about the panthers they are pedo bears, they like dem young. So a 25 year old verse would have gotten gigged with the panthers. Even with NIL and 6th year, and even coofus fallback, panthers prefer younger players. Monroe Freeling (Round 1, Pick 19 | OT, Georgia): 21 years old Lee Hunter (Round 2, Pick 49 | DT, Texas Tech): 22 years old (estimated) Chris Brazzell II (Round 3, Pick 83 | WR, Tennessee): 22 years old Will Lee III (Round 4, Pick 129 | CB, Texas A&M): 21-22 years old (estimated) Sam Hecht (Round 5, Pick 144 | C, Kansas State): 21-22 years old (estimated) Zakee Wheatley (Round 5, Pick 151 | S, Penn State): 22 years old (estimated) Jackson Kuwatch (Round 7, Pick 227 | LB, Miami OH): 22-23 years old   Tetairoa McMillan, WR (Arizona) — Age: 22 Nic Scourton, EDGE (Texas A&M) — Age: 20 Princely Umanmielen, EDGE (Ole Miss) — Age: 21 Trevor Etienne, RB (Georgia) — Age: 20 Lathan Ransom, SAF (Ohio State) — Age: 23 Cam Jackson, DT (FL)- age 22 Mitchell Evans, TE (ND)- age 22 Horn-22   Fitterererere just turned out to be a awful hire, too green, too willing to please, no sense of what talent looks like on teams other than Seahawks, too much pressure, didnt have the correct network of coaches and FO office people. Kick was herniay leftd him with a bare bones talent to start with and besides taking a bottom level team and improving it, he made it even worse AND trading prime draft picks to prolong the timeline to fix. People forget Dan didn't have the 1st overall pick and 39th overall(that dude looking good for bears) to repair this team. Dan could have traded that 1st overall for a proven 1k WR, 9th overall, future 1st and future 2nd......
