Panthers interested in DT Robertson

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Picked this up from the print edition of the Herald.

Gantt says that the Panthers have sent out feelers to DT Dewayne Robertson, originally of the Jets, late of the Broncos. Per Gantt, the Panthers told him that they had interest, but would not be active in the free agent market immediately.

The article stated that they were in contact with others as well, but gave no other names. Logically, they were most likely players who, like Robertson had been waived or cut from their prior teams since this came prior to the start of free agency.

On a larger topic, Gantt also stated that the Panthers have told some of their defensive players to expect a 'revamping' of the defense overall to reflect a more Cover 2 based scheme. There had been speculation on this previously, but now it's confirmed.

I like what they are doing there. Making him aware we are interested might put him off signing with an under achieving team, of course that all depends on his personality. That way as the market settles down we can give him a fair contract based on him, rather than the frantic work of other teams.

He used to be real good. Hopefully he is more interested in winning than winning the $$$

It concerns me that the Broncos would trade for this guy, sign him to a 5 year 24 million dollar contract and then release him after just one year - especially considering how much help they need on defense...

Bare in mind that the Broncos are really re-working their D. From my knowledge Robertson has only played ina 4-3? Maybe they felt he just did not suit the schemes and that his contract was done in a way that made it easy to release him. He had suspect knees before they signed him, so the original contrqact by the olf FO could of been done in a way to protect themselves...

He's a bad fit for the 3-4, but is much better suited to the 'undertackle' role he'd play here opposite Kemo. This would also return Lewis to the rotational role he played before if it happened.

Robertson was looked on as a Sapp kind of player out of college.. He was drafted to play UT in a tampa 2 defense..

Then Herm got fired and Mangini twisted the D into a 3-4 and he was a very bad fit. He would be a fantastic fit in our new scheme.

As long as he is not on the field all the time. He failed a lot of physicals when Denver was trying to trade for him. Shotty knees. He only played in 50% of the downs last year for Denver although that was more because they rotate a lot of guys and not due to injury.

This has Hackett written all over it.

Yep. That's the article. I read it while in a doctor's office waiting room this morning (check up).

It mentions a couple of other names that they're 'monitoring', specifically Darrell Reid and former Panther Jovan Haye, but doesn't specify anyone else they've contacted other than to say they're players who fit the Tampa 2 scheme.

15, 16, 16, 12, 16, & 16.

Those are the games he has started every season he's been in the NFL.

    • Lol.  Now you make me defend DG. We had the best IOL in the league under DG and Oher looked solid until he got that bad concussion. DG drafted Moton and Daryl Williams as well. The OL fell apart under Hurney 2.0 and Fitterer. DG also drafted Star and Short. Sorry, but that was all in 5 drafts so let’s not make stuff up about not trying to improve hog mollies. Gettleman did a ton wrong and took the wrong guys, but he and Rivera had a deep and talented team and it got blown up really quickly. Also, I love Cam but he wasn’t the best QB in the league. He had the best year in 2015 but he wasn’t Brady. I think Dan has had a solid offseason, way better than last year but I’m not putting on rose colored glasses until we actually have a 10 win season. Again, Dave and Ron had 3 10+ wins seasons out of 5.
    • Yeah I wont often comment on a coddled generation and participation trophies but this sort of begs for it. Also how did an athlete achieve at that level without getting a thicker skin?
    • Right, basically what I said. Dude is crowning Dan after a 5-12 season and 1 draft, which as of right now, wasn’t good. I wasn’t judging Morgan at all. People read what they want to read like that I loved Gettleman and think he was awesome. Nope. All I said is that it’s way too freaking early to act like Morgan is amazing. I used the Gettleman/Rivera record just like I mentioned that Rhule almost beat both #1 seeds in this first year. Morgan/Canales’ team would need to win 11 a year to get to a similar record as Gettleman/Rivera’s first 5. If you are going to given Morgan a pass for bad talent, we were 15-33 the 3 years prior to Gettleman/Rivera. Again, I think all of us want this team to win again but maybe I’m a little jaded in thinking that I enjoyed 2013-2017 a helluva a lot more than 2018-2024 and I’m not a fan of smoke getting blown up my ass like we have already back.
