Darius Butler To Play Sunday

If you're a play-maker, then get on the field and make plays. To hell with scheme. Cover your man.

You don't need to know the playbook in order to guard someone man-to-man.

Wish it was that easy, but from what I've noticed in our defensive scheme/system from watching Philly, we love blitzing DBs... Not to mention, a lot of zone blitzes, so he's got to know what his assignment is on each play.

I'm guessing they will put him in on a lot of plays using man coverage because it's simple and for each of those plays that would be his only responsibility - cover your man. Just my guess, but I think that's the "situations" he'll be utilized in for this week until he can get into the playbook.

I think Capt is going to shock some people this year. In McDerment's system he does not ask you to be Tall he asks you to be psychical and Capt is the most psychical CB on this team right now. Yes he could be taller but that does not mean he cant be a CB2. Butler could be a beast at slot if he can learn our system and that will keep Godfrey at SS.

As long as Butler uses his physical skills and lives up to the potential, and Captain is doing work, I could care less how they break down as far as who is the 2 or 3.

And you are right on in your observations... Physicality takes precedent over anything else in this system, and Captain has always been physical. And we tend to break things down in an abstract manner around here i.e. "we need a fat DT and a pass rushing DT," "need a tall #2 CB and slot guy can be small"... But in fact, if the safety has good help over the top with bigger WRs, it really doesn't matter how big the CB is.

I love Captain's game, and I won't ever put a limit on what he can or can't do for multiple reasons... I just knew I'd feel comfortable if we had a slightly bigger CB that we could plug in as a #2, and we have that now in Butler. How that plays itself out remains to be seen, but I trust in the abilities of both and Captain did an awesome job when he started last year so we'll see. I like our top 3 right now.

Problem is the NFL doesn't allow CBs to be physical

They can still be physical and play by the rules. Being physical and covering are two different things and you have to be able to do both.

Most people forget that Darrell Green was one of the best cover CBs in the game and was only 5'9".

I believe we will see a D that is a lot more physical this year. And that includes the CBs as well. If we are agressively going after QBs, the CBs will HAVE to be physical at the line of scrimmage. I did not see a lot of jamming at the line, but I did see a lot of pressing. Which sure beats the cushion WRs got last year.

I realize it was preseason and the D was rather limited. I did however see variations of the base D we did play. Line stunts, players moving around, blitzes from different angles. For a vinilla D they did mix it up. Cannot wait to see how we do things in the regular season.

Just a thought, and GOOOOO PANTHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Darrell Green played in a different era where the NFL wasn't so pussified. No CB that short can start a full season because the NFL took away the ability of CBs to be physical. Without that, shorter CBs get picked apart against taller #1 or #2 WRs. CBs today can't even touch a WR without being called for a penalty.

Captain did a good job starting last year despite his size, and a big reason is because he IS physical... He is probably the best CB on our roster in terms of press coverage. It's after that first 5 yards that the physicality has been taken out of the equation until the ball is caught.

TBH this team prob had to learn how to blitz and be physical.

You missed the point. Darrell Green was a Cover CB not a press CB like Blunt was in that time. They both put up monster numbers and both were totally different types of players.

    • yeah, now it's going to get awkward.  The team circles pay attention to all this stuff.  All the wives and girlfriends see the posts.  They all talk like everyone.  Football is just a normal world outside of the fact they play a game for lots of money.  Gossip travels. They know the Theilen's want out at this point.  Carolina is now the disappointed failed trade location.    So now AT takes sort of an inhouse hit in Carolina IMO
    • Ummm... The dude looked like he was about 180 pounds soaking wet with us (I don't care what his listed weight was/is) - he would have been destroyed in the run game even more than our current and past crappy ILBs. The problem is we primarily play 3-4 or nickel/dime - there is little room on the field for him because he isnt an edge LB blitzer and he can't cover for crap. The only thing he can do kind of well is be an in-the-box safety that can try and beat blockers to the spot because of his athleticism. Washington was able to make him work last year because they used him solely as an in-the-box safety and almost exclusively ran a single high FS. The funny thing is they had good yards/game stats against the pass despite most of their secondary having embarrassingly low PFF grades. Washington was also terrible against the run, which might explain why they gave up so few yards passing.
    • Just get the deal done. We've teased it so much that the Thielen's expect it. Now we run the risk of our veteran WR locker room presence becoming disgruntled. Just take what we can get, make him happy, and get future assets while freeing up snaps for guys who will be here beyond this season.
