Godfrey Extended

For the record, I disagree with the Gamble comparison. At the time he received his extension, Gamble looked to be well on his way to being a top flight corner. I still think he can be; a lot of poo has gone wrong on this team since the fall/winter of 2008. It's important to not pick on one player when the entire team is struggling.

I don't think they would have done this deal if Rivera didn't feel good about Godfrey's ability to be an impact player in the new defense. A lot of folks are questioning Hurney here, but it's Rivera's input that makes me trust the move. The guy knows defense and I seriously doubt Hurney would have given Godfrey this kind of deal without Rivera signing off on it.

This is stupid. Godfrey is a B- safety. Last time I checked, a B- means you're a good player, but FIVE years? Color me perplexed.

Remember, these are the same people that signed Gamble to a big money 6-year extension in 2008.

I have three reasons I like this move:

1. Godfrey is widely perceived as a very good safety...been talked about in many publications.

2. He is listed by many experts as a player who is on the verge of a manor breakout season.

3. SMF does not agree with it. You are wrong so much that you are now a litmus test for any move this team makes.

Guys, you're wrong if you say they didn't give Godfrey top-flight money. Polamalu just re-upped with the Steelers and Godfrey has more guaranteed money coming his way in this new deal than Polamalu does.

The amount of guaranteed money is a way to manipulate the salary cap in the early years of the contract. The younger the player, the more the guaranteed money.

Old players....will never play out their contract.

Young players....more likely to play out their contract.

You CAN'T be that stupid.....can you?

Don't agree with the extension. Good hitter, but think he lacks in coverage. Which is the main job of a DB. Others may like it, but I'll just shake my head and just accept it and hope he finally shows improvement this season. To me, this is the equilivant of extending Delhomme after the Arizona game.

Still just as equally silly moves. I haven't seen any improvement from him yet.

Cause they are both equally silly! Godfrey got beat so many teams last year and giving up TDs. Delhomme gave up INTs. Both guys didn't deserve the extensions they received the next season. Doesn't matter about what position they played. They both should've proven that they deserved the extentions before they got them. Instead we leaned on hope that Delhomme could have 1 more year left in him and hope that Godfrey will improve this year despite our backfield still not looking good this preseason.

No more ridiculous than you not getting it. What blows is Godfrey playing 15 yards off a receiver when the ball is at the 5 yard line and gives up a TD. I keep hearing about his improvement, but that keeps playing in my head along with him giving up long TDs to the guys he was covering last season. He's improved his tackling. But like I said the main job of a DB is covering.

I don't think he is THE problem, but I think he's been one of them so you don't have to put words in my mouth. I don't have to "let it go". You opposed my opinion and so I'm going to defend myself. If everyone agreed with the front office, there would be no use for the huddle. Everything would be just fine and dandy. I don't have to agree with everything the front office does just because "they get paid to do this for a living". So I guess you agree that Delhomme deserved that extension huh? Yeah, there's two sides to that card. Overall though, I like the moves and extensions we've made, besides not having more DT and CB depth and this Godfrey extension.

    • Sometimes it's nice to get an outside perspective on things we are emotionally invested in. NYT/Athletic did a midway breakdown of every teams' biggest offseason acquisitions. Here's our part: Notable additions: Nikolaj Ehlers ($8.5 million x six years), K’Andre Miller (acquired in exchange for a conditional 2026 first-round pick, a 2026 second-round pick and Scott Morrow) Early return: It took the Hurricanes some time to find Ehlers’ ideal lineup fit. He began the season on a line with Sebastian Aho and Seth Jarvis, but that combination didn’t really click, with their marquee signing registering just four points in his first 11 games. Since then, though, Ehlers has settled in and found his groove. The dynamic, speedy Danish winger has scored 27 points in his last 31 games. He initially built chemistry with Logan Stankoven and Jackson Blake, but with Jarvis’ injury, he’s been bumped back up to the top line with Aho and Andrei Svechnikov, with this new-look trio clicking impressively. Ehlers’ game-breaking puck-carrying ability has added an exciting new dimension to Carolina’s rush attack. He’s been a consistently dangerous play-driver (Carolina’s controlled 60 percent of scoring chances during his five-on-five shifts) and I’d argue his point production has actually undersold his impact on Carolina’s offense. Ehlers has collected a point on just 52 percent of the five-on-five goals he’s been on the ice for — he’s been snakebitten and has deserved to pick up a few more assists. I’m also still a fan of Carolina’s expensive bet on Miller. Yes, he’s made occasional mistakes and has been narrowly outscored during his five-on-five minutes despite his strong underlying metrics, but context is important. Miller was supposed to lead Carolina’s second pair, but Jaccob Slavin’s injuries (he’s only played five games this season) have forced him to take on a larger top-pair role. That’s meant eating a career-high 22:35 per game and handling some of the toughest matchups of all NHL defensemen. Miller has held his own in this daunting role, and I’d expect his performance to level up once Slavin’s return allows him to settle into the second-pair slot he was actually acquired to fill.
    • Cam better be wandering up and down the sidelines as an honorary hype man/coach through the entire game Give Cam the halftime show (Cam IS the halftime show) Don't just roll him out with the drum and have that be it
