This, and perhaps they thought that up by 4 or up by 5 is not that much of a difference, so up by 6 would be better.

Being up 6, if the opposition scores you still have a chance to block the extra point and keep the game tied. If you only go up 5, the importance of that extra point is lost since they would already have the lead if they scored a TD.

If something crazy like a kick return and then a turnover and they scored two TDs theywould have had 24 pts. At 16 we were still within one possession of that.
