Since Newton is a play extender, pure route runners aren't required to move the offense. That's bad news for players like LaFell because he lacks the improvisational skills to get open after his route ends. I think the main reason that Cam has been hitting his TE's so much is because Smith has been taking coverage down the field and the TE's are working underneath after their route ends and finding dead spots in coverage for Cam who is back there making pass rushers miss.

That is really all a QB like Newton needs. Players that are smart enough to find dead spots to sit down into once the play breaks. The problem with the rest of the WR on our roster is that they aren't deep threats, don't get a lot of separation, and can't threaten deep because they can't beat anybody in single coverage.

What Donnie Avery would add would give us TWO outside threats to open up the middle of the field for our TE's to be even more effective. It would also take some safety coverage away from Smith to have a pure burner opposite him.

If he comes in and looks fast enough to cause problems on the outside, don't let him leave town without a contract. Bottom line.
