So who would you like the Panthers to draft with our 4th overall pick?

Can of worms officially opened.

1st. Alshon Jeffrey WR USC

2nd. Xavier Rhodes CB FSU

4th. Jerry Franklin OLB Arkansas

5th. Blake Gideon S Texas

6th. Josh Oglesby RT Wisconsin

7th. Jaymes Brooks OG Virginia Tech

I don't want a WR with weight issues. No thanks to Jeffery at all in the next draft. Do not want at all. Plus not enough defense. That's how many holes the defense has.

De, DT, OLB, CB and S are all needs.

Not only is it hard to talk draft in October, but to evaluate college talent and who will be there only becomes a pissing match. That being said, I still think we end up 5-11 and with a top-6 pick. I think we have to take the BPA/franchise player that is either a WR, DT, OL or CB. It's so tough right now because of injuries and youth.

WR - Gettis is injured and we don't know if he's a true game changer or a complimentary player. LaFell has been an enigma and the jury is still out on him as a true #2.

DT - 2 rookies (albeit mid-rounders versus top-10) and who knows if they are Warren Sapp in the waiting or Gerard Warren. Edwards is 32, but could be a stop-gap if this class of DT's are reaches, allowing us to maybe re-visit DT in '13.

OL - The elephant in the room. Gross will be 32 when the season starts which is okay, but eventually a replacement needs to be groomed. If Otah can't stay healthy, maybe drafting Kalil and sliding Gross over to RT is better forward thinking.

CB - Seemed like our biggest glaring hole but our crew has maintained the ship. Gamble's game has been solid, but he (like Gross) will soon start to decline. If Butler and Hogan are what we hope they can be, allowing Captain to slide into the nickel or dime, we might not need a CB this draft year.

If the draft was today, I would go Blackmon or Kalil. Thus far, none of the collegiate DT's have impressed me and as we've seen with Newton, Peppers, and Gross, if you're picking top-10, you better make a splash. Whomever is there when we pick, that fills a need (except OLB) will make me happy.

How fast is Jefferey? A Fat WR is scary, anyone know where Jarrett is these days? Is he playing in Canada or just drunk in a bar somewhere?

EDIT: looked it up, 4.56 which is in Dwayne Jarrett land. If he's fat and has a reputation for being lazy, no thank you.

Personally, I would draft Matt Kalil OT with out first round pick. Trade next years 1st for Brandon Thompson DT, then pick up Chase Minnifield, CB/KR in the 2nd. I know cringe trading next years 1st, but if we get all the pieces we need these year, we wont have to wish and hope next year.

DT-Unless there is a Warren Sapp or N. Suh type of tackle, we'd be better off getting a veteran in free agency. (We're letting McClain and Fua play this year so they'll be better off next year, right?)

DE- With CJ and Hardy, it would be a waste drafting a DE this high.

The first pick should be the best one of these: OLB, OT, WR or S.

Come on man. Not enough defense? I just don't see us drafting a DT with a high pick. Defensive end will also not be a pick early. Lastly i don't get the weight issue crap. Jeez man there is a huge difference in the college 15 and NFL ready. Alshon fits exactly what Cam needs a big tall WR that can make circus catches and go up and get em. I mean i understand to justify taking a DT, DE or for christsakes a LB with a top 5 pick or passing on a top WR you have to tear them down a little but lets be real.

We drafted 2 rookie DTs that are taken majority of snaps this year just to turn around and draft there replacement next year? We have one guy that we did pick up in free agency that hasnt even seen the field yet. I just think the D line needs more veteran presence not anymore inexperience. This is just not a defensive draft like last year, especially if your picking high.

    • No you dont.  He had all those records for years before his final season. Whether career or season he had them all years before his final season in which he played 6 games.
    • Williams covered for Moore by saying they were on the wrong page about Moores specific route. Williams could have easily covered for him by saying he messed up. Suggesting only 1 route was ever intended to be a viable target is absurd.
    • I am going to agree with Linville this time--I think we need to get a veteran edge (We have Jones II, Scourton, and Princely--2 developmental guys and a decent veteran).  We don't really think of Jones because he had a hamstring injury weeks 3 and 4 and a back that required surgery Week 6-17.  He still managed 10 pressures, and he will be 28.  Princely Umanmielen only played in approximately 18-20% of the snaps and he struggled at times.  Basically, he was a situational pass rusher.  He got 1.5 sacks and 10 pressures.  He should improve, but for now, he is what he is.  Scourton gives us hope.  For a rookie (and thanks to Jones II's injuries, he was given more PT), he had 8 sacks--and held the edge.  He played at a first-round draft pick level.  He has the potential to become "that guy" in 2026. We lose Wonnum, who played nearly 700 snaps and amassed 3 whole sacks.  For a person raised a Gamecock, I would not be upset if we purged our roster of all South Carolina alumni.   However, I see it this way:  Wonnum was decent holding the edge, something Patrick Jones II and Scourton have demonstrated at a high level.  He is a liability, if you ask me.    Jones had 7 sacks one season in Minnesota and is known for his inside rushing ability--not what you would call a speed rusher.  I think Princely was a bit disappointing, but he was a bit raw.  Out of college, they described him as being a bit predictable.  I see no reason he will not improve in 2026 and become a situational pass rusher.   Basically, with Scourton and Princely expected to continue to develop and Jones II returning from injury, I think we need another veteran (if we can get a good one) to give us balance and depth.  A third developmental player is not ideal.   Draft:  OT, LB, WR, OL depth, S. Free Agency:  Edge, possibly a WR;  re-sign Mays, Cuhran, BC (??), and Nijman.  Let walk:  Wonnum, Scott, Dowdle.  I see about $20m per year after signing the OL depth.  Spend it on a veteran edge.   Players like Reddick (Tampa), Bosa (Buffalo), Khalil Mack (LAC) could be available on a one or two year deal in the $15m range.  We could splurge here, but I think a veteran situational pass rusher (depending on Jones II's back) is all we need while our 2 young guns develop.
