Why does Byron Bell still play?

errr not to ruin the "down with the Panthers" parade, but Bell hasn't played bad by any standard. He's not All-Pro, but for an un-drafted rookie, he has done a superb job.

Guess you missed where he got another drive killing penalty today. 15 yards hands to the face. I was at the game so I wasn't able to see how many times he got torched resulting in newton sacks but I'm sure it was a lot.

He's playing b/c we have no one else.

For an UDFA he's doing awesome. We need better play out of him, but he wasn't even in a large college & to come in & do what he's done is great. I hope he progresses to where he could be a starter, but with time he will be at worst a great backup.

It's easy to get frustrated with Byron with these penalties but I try to maintain the perspective here. It'd be one thing if we were a very well-disciplined team and he was the only one not catching on. The whole team is making stupid penalties, including ones today on 67 and 69. Byron's got to step his game up but so does everyone else and he doesn't deserve to be singled out.

It doesn't matter if he was undrafted or a first round. I've been saying since he first started that he is clearly the weakest link in the o-line and he's been affecting the play calling due to his poor play.

The fact that he was undrafted doesn't matter. What's next? Are we going to praise a new guy because he is pretty good for a middle school player?

Good point.

    • One thing I didn’t consider is how thin this draft is at quarterback. That’s going to drive up the market for backups and borderline starters like Willis, Jones, and Jameis Winston. Because of that, we’ll most likely be priced out of the market for this tier of backup.
    • We've already beat the #1 seed twice, why not one more? (Packers and Rams were both #1 seed at the time we played)
    • My determination has come down to this. Based on recent QB history, has Bryce's improvement warranted 50m per season? Lamar is the only original team QB to play on his 5th year. The others took major deals at the end of the 3rd, before or just after the option was signed. Chances are, we're getting asked for the same.  I haven't rooted for Bryce to fail. I've rooted for him to succeed so big that them signing that extension would give me no worries about our future at QB at all. We haven't seen that level of play consistently that this year. We haven't seen it in the past 6 games.  We're about to be at a threshold with Bryce and I worry about what this front office will do. We have a history of bad decision making and Morgan has been part of that group making those decisions. I don't want Carolina in the same boat Arizona and Miami are right now. It has nothing to with being right. It has to do with wanting to win for more than a single season. We've never had back to back winning seasons. Faith in their abilities is not warranted at this point.
