Travelle Wharton

If not he very well could be done imo. He rated out as a way below average G and he gets payed like a LT. I love the dude but he might not be here come TC.

Thats absurd. Overpaid? Yep, but was he supposed to tuen the contract down? He's a very good guard who can play 4 of the 5 spots on the OL. He's one of the leaders and most respected vets on the team.

Reasonable measures should be taken to keep him here.

we're not going to extend a 31 year old guard lmao

we could let him go and start bernadeau in his spot

hangartner/schwartz fight for RG

otah/draft pick at RT

gross and kalil stay the same

good stuff if you ask me

Gross got burned quite a few times this year. He's getting up their too. When the time comes I'm sure he will move inside anyway. I have no real problem with him.

Wharton is paid like a LT because he can play LT (in a pinch). He is healthy and has the ability to move down the line which is a plus considering injuries in recent years. 2 years ago he was probably our best OL. Noticed some drop off, and if he getting outplayed by someone younger and cheaper on the line then fine, but just because of his contract numbers is silly. We all here have seen strengths become weakness.

Have you somehow forgotten how bad Bernadeau sucks?

OL's don't miraculously just turn old, they have pretty long career's on avg.

When we paid him the big money he did deserve them. He could play the very important LT position and as you say both G and RT. So I am not bashing either him nor Hurney :) But he is not worth the money anymore. And he is not a very good G anymore so for us to pay him LT money is just stupid. As for the leader and most respected vet part, that is hard to put a price on but it is not worth the money we are paying him.

Just for the record.... I love the dude, he could very well be at my top 15 players of all time.

I know one site had him rated low, but I'll be damned if I can see it from watching the games, and I have watched each game at least twice. We all have seen Bell's struggles and his improvement toward the end of the year. Kalil went through a rough patch for a couple of games. Hangartner was a swinging gate in a couple of games. But I can honestly say I only remember maybe one or two plays when Wharton just totally blew it.

He doesn't do much of anything with 2nd level blocking, but once he is engaged with his man, he typically holds his own very well.

Perhaps reviewing game tape shows a different story, but from what can be seen on the broadcast, he played well this year.

He's a team first guy, one of the ones who paid for this past off season's work out. I think he'd gladly do it. Not many guys expect their contracts to go to full term, it hardly ever happens. That's also a reason total contract value is very misleading.

LOL! He could have handled that all by himself.

Wharton is still a very good guard, go rewatch some games if you think otherwise.
I don't anyone here is inferring he isn't good enough to get paid good money. Some of us may be concerned on the line between good and too much money.

We also have yet to see what our rookie Zack Williams has yet to do also.

We currently have:

Zack Williams

Travelle Wharton

Geoff Hangartner

Geoff Schwartz

Mackenzy Bernadeau

Garry Williams

All are at Guard, someone is the odd man out.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
