Panthers helped 49ers beat Saints

Well, sort of... :sosp:

Per Michael Silver, the idea for the final play to Vernon Davis came from Niners QB coach - and former Panthers staff member - Geep Chryst.

How did Chryst come up with the idea? By thinking back to his days of facing the Saints while working for the Panthers :D

Pertinent excerpt:

For all the credit that Harbaugh has deservedly received for the Niners’ dramatic turnaround, his assistants have also played a key role. In fact, a conversation early last week between offensive coordinator Greg Roman and quarterbacks coach Geep Chryst lay the foundation for Davis’ dramatic catch. “I’ve got to give our quarterbacks coach a lot of credit,” Roman said Sunday night while taking a break from studying film on the Giants. “He called me into his office and said he had an idea for a red-zone play against them, and he was just so emphatic about it. He previously worked for the Panthers and was very familiar with their defense, and he came up with something he thought would work. And when I saw it, I got excited, too.

And something worth remembering for the future.

The play, “Vernon Post,” is predicated on the theory that the Saints are adept at covering the whole end zone in that situation, rather than leaving the back exposed. “They do a better job than most teams of defending the entire depth,” Roman explained. “Their safeties sit right inside the goal line and are really flat-footed – and if you go vertical on [Harper], he starts to pedal softly backwards. So there’s a hole for the tight end, and it’s got to be thrown with perfect timing and rhythm.”

We should have taken Carlos Rogers last off season..

no no no no no! rogers is one of those evil outside free agents!

why in the world would we pay $2.13 million for a pro bowl CB when he's from a -gasp- different team

much better to reward our own guys, like giving $72 million for a DE to get 9 sacks or $43 million for a RB to get 9 carries a game

duh man, JR and hurney know what they're doing!

MUUUUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

As if it wasn't satisfying enough watching the Saints lose while Roman Harper rolled around on the turf like a little b*tch, now we find out our former TE coach drew up the play to expose a specific weakness in the Saints defense that he learned while he was on our payroll.

If this is true then my hat's off to Geep Chryst.

    • You're assuming just as well.   Morgan and Canales were hired 3 days apart.  I believe it was partially due to their connections in Seattle.  i believe Tepper wanted some familiarity with his GM and HC.  It is so easy to sit back and arm-chair QB over draft picks.  You don't know what the philosophy was going into the 2024 draft.  I believe Canales and Morgan were drafting for the future.  XL and Brooks point to that philosophy. Name me one GM that is 100% on draft picks.  Just one.  You're not going to find one.    I think year one picks weren't for what can you do for me now but Potential.   XL hasn't lived up to the hype of a 1st rounder.  I think we all can agree on that. However, there still is hope he comes around.  What I believe they saw in him was his speed after the catch.  He needs to get more consistent but when he gets the ball you kind of hold your breath just a second because if he gets free, he's gone.  The Brooks pick was a signing for the future, and no one could have guessed he would re-injure the same ACL.  This makes the pick look bad but Dallas was ready to draft him later that same round.  IMO we'll have to see what happens next season before we can call this a bust. Wallace has improved each season and for a third rounder has done well.  Sanders has shown flashes and considering the pick in the 4th round it wasn't a bad pick.  His sophomore season IMO was a little bit more productive.  Smith-Wade has been a good addition and has played well.  For a 5th round pick to get as much playing time as he has.  Most picks below round 3 should take a couple of years to get up to speed.  He's been a decent player.  Crumedy, no comment We turned Barrett into Jackson.  This was an amazing move and basically got a starting CB for a 7th round pick.  Pretty shrewd if you ask me. Coker, maybe the best Free Agent signing of the 2024 draft class. So, in short, you can't say that the draft was a bust.  It isn't a home run but all but one are still on the team and outside of Brooks have made contributions to wins.  2025 draft class has been much better with almost every pick making contributions this season.  Now take Fitterer's two years and compare them to Morgan and tell me that they have the same philosophy.
    • He hasn’t led crap, he’s on loaded teams and a piece of the puzzle. And he’s he has improved drastically but it took the ultimate QB whispers in Shanahan and KOC. You put him on this Panther team and he’s back to normal Darnold
    • Slavin and Jarvis week to week. Florida cheap shots took out our two best players.  I’d start KK so he can beat the brakes off someone.
