The Secret for Turning Around an NFL Franchise

Sound familiar?

Very good article, thanks for the link. Fwiw the above quote is why I love guys like Cam, and Smitty and value guys like Still, and Markelle Martin in the draft.

yeah, that quote jumped out at me as well. As soon as I read that my mind went to Cam's hatred for losing and wanting everyone to get up to his level in that regard.

We are more on the right track than people realize.

The stability factor was one that really stuck out at me as well. People may think that we'll be fine if Chud leaves and that might be true, but we will be better and go further sooner if we have stability in the coaching staff going into next year.

Why?

I was listening to Gil Brandt last year on NFL late night and he said Otah was soft. Apparently the knock across the league is that he either can't or won't play with any pain. And as Gil said, after the first few games, every player has some injuries and concerns and plays through a certain amount of pain. Brandt said that Otah had all the physical talent in the world but didn't have the tough mentality you need to succeed at a high level in the NFL. Him not playing all year was just evidence of that and is why he is Rivera's doghouse. That comment about the O-line was about replacing Otah. I speculate that he is only here because Hurney still wants him here not Rivera.

I'm hoping that Otah makes a significant turnaround in his mentality so that we don't have to worry about OT.

It's a shame to have someone so talented and who could be so dominant that doesn't have the toughness to stick with it.

It takes away from other areas that needs more of an infusion of talent.

"Ability without character will lose," Levy said. "When things go wrong, and they will, the guy without character is going to quit or blame others or be more concerned with himself than the team or be disruptive with a drug bust or something like that."

This was what stood out to me the most. This is the reason why you keep guys like D Lo and Smith.

I agree with Brandt and thanks for posting this.

Brandt was extremely high on Cam Newton from the get go as well. He is pretty much spot on in his analysis. He didn't spend all those years with the Cowboys because he was stupid. Love his interviews on the Sirius radio.

The Otah issues have to dealt with....tackles are not easy to find and they protect Newton, that is why I would not be surprised to see a change there...OTs in the later rounds are a rarity. Gross isn't getting any younger either.

I wonder about this as well, and how much juice Rivera has in deciding who is on our roster.

That worries me. Without starting the whole MH argument again, I would prefer it if RR has the predominant influence in deciding who stays and who goes.

I find it strange that all of the so called "experts" fail to mention drafting a popular, bible thumping quarterback that can't throw for schit.

I don't recall any of them liking The Golden Calf of Bristol, and certainly not as a 1st round pick.

Many also didn't like Clausen, a few did of course, including the obvious one, Kiper.

I don't think it's a huge issue because I fully believe like Fox, Rivera has just as much say in who they draft.

People like to bash Hurney for failed draft picks but fail to recognize Fox had every bit of control as he did.. common sense would say maybe even more since he was the coach building around his team.

Problem is that so many things go into picking draft picks and free agents, that no one will have the predominant say. Rivera knows what kind of guy he wants, the scouts have to go out and find those guys and Hurney has to work out the details and make it fit. They all need to work together to get it right.
