Captain Munnerlyn "sick of" talk Panthers need a corner

MOBILE, Ala. – There was an impromptu defensive staff meeting for the Carolina Panthers today following the early Senior Bowl practice at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.

Defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, linebackers coach Warren Belin and new secondary coach Steve Wilks spent about 15 minutes visiting with cornerback Captain Munnerlyn, who lives in Mobile in the offseason.

It was Munnerlyn's first opportunity to meet Wilks, the Charlotte native who was hired last week from San Diego in what amounted to a trade with the Chargers. Former Panthers defensive backs coach Ron Meeks is taking Wilks' spot in San Diego.

Wilks, who worked with Ron Rivera in Chicago and San Diego, said he was glad to be joining a “great organization” while returning to his hometown, where all his family still lives.

“To come back home is really just the icing on the cake. It's definitely great,” said Wilks, who graduated from West Charlotte in 1988. “I have a lot of love and passion for the city of Charlotte, being born and raised there.”

Some draft analysts believe the Panthers could take a cornerback with their first-round pick. Wilks said he likes the determination of the diminutive Munnerlyn, who started the first 14 games last season before injuring his hamstring.

Just seeing him on film, I love the way he plays with the passion and heart,” Wilks said. “Those are the kind of guys I love being around.”

Munnerlyn said he's tired of hearing about how the Panthers need another corner.

“I'm sick of it. But if they do, the cornerback they draft has a rude awakening coming. I'm not just going to give you my position,” Munnerlyn said.

“Or if they try to push him in front of me, I'm going to make some plays to make him go sit down. I'm a competitor. Everyone knows I'm going to compete.”

Munnerlyn wouldn't know what hit him if we drafted Janoris Jenkins.

i love Captain. definitely want him to remain a panther. has never backed down from a challenge: overcoming 7th round pick 'status', punt returns, to becoming a starter, to playing great as a gunner on special teams. I just don't know how I feel about him as our number two.

He's just isn't a number two. Big heart, small body.

    • Lil Stanky 100% in the dot tonight... And our 2nd line has been our best offensive line this season. Maybe our 2C really was on the roster this whole time...?
    • That’s a grade I kind of expected tbh. I’m not a huge fan of NS, but he’s not as bad as what the huddle says he is minus the horrible game he had vs the Rams. I’ve always thought he’s often used as a scapegoat. The improved pass rush should hide his deficiencies a little bit better if he’s the game one starter. FS might have to be a position we punt on this year unless Thieneman falls to us at 19. The reality is, you're going to have a few average players in certain spots for a team with as many holes we had before free agency started. You can’t sign everyone.
    • I am by no means trying to say he's a world beater. I'm saying it's trending in the right direction. Especially when measured against himself.i think the team feel the same way or else they wouldn't have picked up his option. Plus I think there is a new idea in the NFL about these young QBs. Teams give up to soon. Browns gave up to soon on baker same with the jets on Geno and darnold. Maybe they are who you thought they were in the draft process and they need more time to develop than you originally planned. Either way. I do think he is as capable as darnold is as far as you can win a championship with him. And something he does have that darnold doesn't is he is clutch.  If I need one more drive and 2 mins to go I'm betting on Bryce and I am far from a homer, just going off his game winning drives. He has that dog in him on the last drive.
