Antonio Garay on Boomer and Carton this AM..

This team used to try and emmulate the Steelers, who have like 6 world titles. Why are we now trying to be the Chargers, who have pretty much been a poo franchise since jumpstreet?

This is just a curious question, not to knock Garay per se.

the way it sounds the market and demand for him was going to be pretty small anyway. no one is expecting him to be all that expensive. it sounds like he just wants an opportunity to start or at least get a lot of PT and a legit shot at starting. he also sounds like he really wants to get back with rivera so he'd probably be pretty agreeable to any respectable contract offer. he's not someone that will require us breaking the bank for.

...and it sounds like he might give us a discount for the chance to play under Rivera again.

you know how many losing seasons the chargers have had over the last 8 years?

zero.

There model works. There issue is making noise in the postseason.

Hard to tell if it's the Chargers, or the Schottenheimer/Turner effect?

Interesting for you then. If we did mirror SD and became a perennial playoff team every year for the next 6 or 7 seasons, but never won it all, how would you feel? It's a HUGE step up for us, but I could see how that could get frustrating for SD fans eventually.

We're not trying to emulate the Chargers as much as we're trying to copy their defense. You know, the same defense that Rivera built? Ron Rivera? Our head coach. Also, I didn't know we were in the position to look down on more successful franchises. What are we proud of again?

Damn I didn't realize that. No more arguments from me then. :o

yep, in the 10 years of the Shotty/Norv eras they have had 1 losing season. Not many teams fire a coach that goes 14-2 either.

adding in some read option stuff for Cam doesn't mean we aren't running a comparable offense either. We are Chargers East right now.

Joat come on, you see how easily RE got injured last year? anything can happen and depth is a good thing to have especially at DT its not like its your pocket book you gotta pull millions from and the dude is from SD isn't it a lock

JOAT always brings the negative side to any situation. I've only witnessed him say a few positive things the whole time I have posted here.

didn't realize he had both the Chicago and Chargers ties. Might as well call him a Panther now.
well...he dind't really play much. he got a little bit of play time in but towards the end of '07 he had a blocker take a cheap shot/illegal block on him and got him put on IR. since then he really didn't get a chance to do anything until rivera got him plugged in.

Like rayzor said, Garray is more of a UT while Edwards is an NT, so they could compliment each other nicely.

McClain and/or Fua may turn out to be great, but right now they are still unknown commodities and the rest of the guys we have are at best decent rotational players, so we need to keep an eye out for a another vet like this to get us over the hump while we continue to develop our young guys. Even if we draft a DT with the # 9 pick, you have to give the kid at least a year to get a clue, so we need vets like Garray (at a reasonable price) to span the gap.

as much as i want a DT in the draft this year, i'd be satisfied adding garay to what we have and letting fua and mcclain develop for another year.

I think they were referring to the way the team is run, not the specific players. Richardson wants a stable system that works over the long term. So far it hasn't worked.

Rivera utilizing players he is familiar with only makes sense and so far it's only been role players.

    • Per Bill Barnwell  Vikings bring back a familiar face Vikings get: WR Adam Thielen Panthers get: 2026 sixth-round pick, 2027 seventh-round pick A reunion between Thielen and his former team seems too easy. The Vikings are struggling with injuries at wide receiver and a potential Jordan Addison suspension. The Panthers want to see what they have with their younger wideouts, and Hunter Renfrow's emergence in camp as a potential fourth or fifth option could squeeze a roster spot for Thielen, who doesn't play special teams. The problem is Thielen's $6.25 million base salary. The Vikings obviously would prefer the Panthers cut the 34-year-old and pick him up for free, but Carolina already paid Thielen a $1.5 million roster bonus earlier in the offseason, suggesting it expected to have him. His salary isn't yet guaranteed, but it will become so if he's on the roster in Week 1, leaving the Panthers until then to make a decision. If he does get released, he isn't likely to get anything close to $6.25 million from another team, so he also is facing some uncertainty. All sides involved probably would need to give a bit to make a mutually advantageous deal work. The Panthers would eat $1.5 million of Thielen's contract, getting two of the three picks the Vikings got from the Jets in the Harrison Phillips trade in return. Thielen would take a $1 million pay cut in return for having the remaining $3.8 million guaranteed. The Vikings cleared out almost exactly that much when they made the Phillips trade, allowing them to absorb what's left of Thielen's contract as part of the deal. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46053274/nfl-preseason-trades-2025-team-offers-players-draft-picks-contracts
    • From JoeBucsFan. Teams don't usually waste 2nd round picks like that. Kind of sounds like they think he just doesn't belong in the NFL.
