Give up next years first?

wonder whatever happened to that 1st rounder we gave up for e.brown? here's PFF ranking of the olines for 2011

20. San Francisco 49ers (11th)

Run Rank 8th, Pass Rank 26th, Penalties Rank 18th

The 49ers line came in for more praise than it was due because of their dominance of the NFC West. While it does have plenty of talent and upside (particularly on the left), it’s a long way from delivering on it. They need to fix the problematic right guard spot, after Mr. Boom-or-Bust, Chilo Rachal (-8.2), was all bust this year. This line isn’t miles away from being very good, but it will need Anthony Davis (-15.0) to start playing more consistently.

Best Player: Since coming into the league, Mike Iupati (+9.6) has looked like he has belonged. A top talent.

Worst Player: You have to wonder about how bad the rest of the 49ers’ guards are in practice in that they’re forced to turn to Adam Snyder (-24.4).

The last 2 times we did that, things didn't really work out.

Otah - Can't stay on the fuging field for more than a second.

Brown - Ugh.

It's like Hurney spends all his time focusing on who he wants in the 1st and has less time to research the other guys. Then when someone drops, he gets impulsive and pulls the trigger, which just fugs things up. I would be all for trading away our 2nd and 3rd rounds picks though. We never seem to do much with them.

Did some of you guys miss the whole otah brown edwards dibacle that singlehandedly crippled this franchise. It is a miracle in itself that we are able to get out of the mess trading draft picks got us into so quickly

Crippled this franchise? Have you seen the slop some teams have drafted with their first round picks in the same time frame? Under Hurney we have faired well with our first rounders.....if the worst we did was a use on on Brown and Otah and hit homeruns....we have done well. We have used out first rounders better than most teams. Draft is a gamble if you never trade picks...staying put doesn't increase your odds really of hitting on talent. In most drafts late 1st round and early 2nd round talent is comparable...NEEDS often drive how it gets split. As long as we use the pick on someone who proves to be a legit starter it really doesn't matter how we use them.

We got our QB. The top 5 picks with the uber studs can only be obtained by mainly being a horrible team. You can get back into most spots.

All I am saying is Rivera is trying to build his team. Would be nice for him to have more than 2 of the top 100+ picks. Even if they don't trade next years first I think it will be a priority to get him another pick.

Meh. Lafell, Godfrey, Connor, Kalil, Martin, and Johnson vs. Jarrett, Irvin, Brown, Clausen, and Edwards over the past four drafts (not counting the most recent) is kind of a push. I say keep taking shots at it. I think people expect too much out of the 2nd and 3rd rounds anyway.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
