Jaguars looking to trade down

After the Rams got a king’s ransom from the Redskins for the right to draft Robert Griffin III, the Jaguars want the rest of the league to know that they’re open to trading their own first-round pick to any team interested in Texas A&M’s Ryan Tannehill.

Jaguars G.M. Gene Smith said today that the potential interest in Tannehill could lead to a trade at No. 7, according to John Oehser of Jaguars.com.

However, teams that are interested in Tannehill may have to trade up higher than No. 7 to get him. As Peter King noted today, drafting Tannehill may require trading all the way up into the Top 4.

In fact, if it becomes apparent that the Browns are interested in drafting Tannehill at No. 4 overall, it’s even conceivable that some team could trade all the way up to No. 3 to take him before Cleveland can. With Andrew Luck surely going first overall to the Colts and Griffin surely going second to the Redskins, trading up to No. 3 would be the only way for a team that loves all three of the top quarterbacks in the draft to ensure it can select Tannehill.

Forget about the Jaguars at No. 7. The team that has to love the talk about Tannehill’s stock rising is Minnesota, which is now in the driver’s seat in the first round.

It may turn out in six weeks that NFL teams don’t covet Tannehill quite that much, and he’ll still be available several picks into the first round of the draft. But if the Dolphins were counting on a fallback plan at quarterback of drafting Tannehill with the eighth overall pick, then they’d better make sure they sign Peyton Manning or Matt Flynn.

If they get a trade suitor, this definitely decreases our chances of trade or the other two teams left in the top 10.

Ha! All the Jags did was to drive up the value for the picks at 4, 5 and 6. Now everyone knows that they have to leapfrog Jax to get him. What if the rams scored another big deal to move out of 6! They'll have half the picks in the first two rounds. :)

they aren't saying they want tannehill. they are saying that they are more than open to trading with any player wanting to trade up for tannehill.

if they pull this off then it just increases our chances of getting claiborne.

If I'm the Vikings I would trade out of 3 in a heartbeat if a team is willing to give up anything close to what Washington did. Any trade into the top 8 for Tannehill will push better players down to the Panthers. I'm all for that!

If you need anymore evidence that the NFL is a QB-first league these days, just look at the legit possibility of teams trading up to 3 for Tannehill.
