Would Decastro Really Be That Bad Of A Pick?

I understand that the offensive guard position isn't something you truly covet especially in the top 10, but I just look at a prospect like DeCastro who is a guaranteed pro bowler for the next ten years and I just don't understand why we wouldn't want that.

Especially since we just released Wharton and Shwartz. We gotta protect Cam's pretty face, that's almost gotta be a #1 priority. With the lack of top 10 defensive talent I really think that DeCastro might be Hurney's kinda guy that he feels safe picking.

DeCastro is a once in a decade prospect.

I honestly think he's a top 5 prospect, and easily pushes Kalil for the #1 offensive linemen.

Well they both play different spots. Kalil being the top Tackle, DeCastro best Guard. I'm still hoping Morris Claiborne drops to us.

No it would be a fantastic pick. I've been saying that for months even before Wharton was cut. Claiborne would be the only guy I would pick over him at 9.

My mind has changed on this. Initially with Schwartz and Wharton on the roster I didn't want him, but now with both of them gone I wouldn't be upset with the pick. However, I do think D is still a much bigger need, particularly in the secondary.

No, he would be a great pickup. However, he wouldn't be in position (literally) to totally change the game. A DE/CB/DT has the ability to change the outcome of the game (interception, sack, FF) whereas the G does not.

They prevent the DT's from changing the outcome of the game, so in effect, they change the outcome of the game. Checkmate.

To be perfectly honest, after watching more tape on OL prospects I'd argue DeCastro is better right now than Matt Kalil and more polished than Mike Iupati who came out in 2010. It definitely isn't sexy to pick a guard at #9, same as picking a TE in the 1st, but I could see Hurney pull the trigger. I'm biased in that I would go defensive line 10/10 times, but if it's between a WR or OG, I'd take the OG unless Calvin Johnson is sitting there. It's a difficult balance in the value of picks, OT has always been more valuable than OG, but I think we're slowly seeing OG matter more an more. Getting an elite LG would certainly boost our hybrid vertical pass/ spread offense.

I don't think many would argue that DeCastro is the best OL in the draft, but his position loses ground to the more illustious LT spot. Just because he's behind Kalil in all the mocks doesn't make him the lesser prospect.

A dominant DT is more valuable than a dominant G, however.
