New Deal For Steve Smith

He needed to extended, no doubt. However this is why being so close to the cap is not a good thing generally. When they put themselves in that situation it makes it very clear to a player like Smith and his agent that the team needs to restructure for the short term. It puts all the leverage into the hands of the player.

Not if said player is Steve Smith, wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

Ok.

To me, it is simply pointless to pay guys what they have no chance to make outside of Carolina. You do that with too many players and limits how good you can make your overall team. Why is it cool if we drastically overpay an aging WR and not others?

Because Steve Smith is hands down the greatest player this franchise has ever had, and even if you overpay for him, it's not like it's going to hurt you forever. He's gonna be done at the end of the contract anyway, so if we pay a million or two more than we should have for a couple years, it keeps our young franchise QB's favorite target around, buys us time to not be forced into reaching to draft a replacement for him, and really only stops us from spending that extra couple of million on some FA that isn't going to end up being worth it anyway.

I can't believe you ho's are in here complaining about signing Smitty to an extension. I read the headline and thought I'd come here to celebrate with my fellow Panthers fans. Smitty will be a Panther for life. He'll be the first truly great player that the Panthers drafted out of college that spends his entire career here. Bringing down his cap number for this year helps too. Get your heads out of your asses and be happy for once.

Yeah, but paying guys for what they have done isn't a great practice.

and if you overpay Smith and large number of players are overpaid on the same roster.....it does clearly hurt the overall team for the immediate future.

Hopefully they did give him a comparable deal to Wayne so that it will be a moot issue

No one is complaining Smith got an extension. Everyone wanted that.....some are just delaying over fapping to it until the numbers come out. Could be a good move or a great move.....when the number are out I will fap accordingly

I understand that overpaying guys is not a great practice. Williams got overpaid given the circumstances with a younger, better Stewart waiting to take his place. But guys like CJ, who we didn't and still don't have a replacement for and who would have gone to a division rival, and Steve Smith, whom we haven't had a complement to in forever and has been our best player for a decade, sometimes warrant getting paid above market value, even if it is typically not a great idea. I'm not saying give Smitty a Fitzgerald or Megatron contract, but he certainly deserves to be paid whatever the Panthers give him IMO.

You sir, have become a resident whiner.

Turn that concerned frown upside down! Drink the kool-aid and fuging stop worrying about things you can't control. If you want to be GM of the panthers, go for it. Until then, you're a just a message board genius like the rest of us. Take a chill pill.

Well I am definitely not a kool aid drinker on everything.

Last I checked we have no control over anything we talk about here. People complain as worry about everything....giving thoughts on something you can't control isnt a unique thing that applies to me.

I am not upset.... I think those who get upset over someone wanting wait until the contract details are out to rejoice need to take a chill pill. Hurney IMO has not been wise with the wallet......he tends to pay a lot for guys who have meant a lot to this franchise.

Anyway, anyone upset by my comment is making a mountain out of a molehill.

So if Hurney overpays yet another player....it won't bother you? I am happy with Smitty...doesn't mean Hurney can pay him whatever and it be a smart move.

Smith needed to be extended....but overpaying everyone will have it's consequences/negatives for this team (and already has)

He sells seats ,PSLs etc just like Cam.If you are going to overpay make sure the guy brings fans.

    • As far as elite/elevate talent QB’s It’s Allen Mahomes Jackson and Burrow that’s it.  Then we have tiers and those can be debated all day Dak is a good QB but I know this board would want him out of Charlotte if he was the QB here. 2 playoff wins in 10 years. Justin Herbert no playoff wins. Threw 4 interceptions in last years playoff game. 23 TD passes last year. 20 the year below and 25 the year before that. This board loves stats without context and these stats aren’t saying they’re much above complimentary  Kyler Murray isn’t good. I’m not sure how he made this list.  Caleb Williams, Trevor Lawrence both benefiting from some real good offensive coaches right now. They’re both complimentary pieces until proven otherwise  I like Jordan Love. Always have. I wanted to draft him but he isn’t a superstar.  CJ Stroud hasn’t been much better than Bryce after his rookie season. After that Bears game year 2 his numbers very similar to Bryce I will say I think Drake Maye is well on his way to becoming the next top tier QB if I had to pick one from this entire list. I’d also say Baker Mayfield is a damn good QB and I’d take him over most of those guys not in the elite category  Now if you want to debate tools and which QB’s possess tools to put them in higher tiers that’s a completely different discussion. Most QB’s on your main list all have those physical tools that will keep you thinking he’ll become the next top tier QB. They’ll sprinkle in a “wow” play or two a game. Bryce will never look that way. Young’s game at its peak will physically always look different and I think that’s where most people struggle when it comes to seeing how Young’s can be successful in the league  All QB’s need a team around them. I think the Bills are failing Josh Allen much like the Panthers did Cam. Beane and McDermott using same blueprint with Bills team. Josh Allen hasn’t had much in terms of WR’s and it’s ultimately costing them when it matters the most
