Which Player Deserves One More Shot?

Are you shitting me? Cap has beyond proven he is too small to be a starting corner in the nfl. Martín was too awful to think he can be saved.

Captain can play nickel corner. He has limitations.... but every other year he displayed promise.

And again, Godfrey has sucked it up much more than Martin in Carolina. I get people not being happy with Martin this past year...... but Godfrey hasn't been consistantly worse. Doesn't make sense to only call Martin out.

Any player/position that performs poorly I'd list as a need and look to improve it if possible.

For me it's less about who is deserving and more about what options there are. If the next JPP is sitting there at #9 then I'm taking him and Hardy would just have to suck it up. To me, I think Cox is the best bet there so that just sucks for McClain. Same way Clausen got sh*t on because our FO decided Cam was the best pick. Oh well.

It's all about the value and opportunity to improve the team, not on deciding who to give a 2nd chance to.

The question was who should we count on to start without bringing in someone in through the draft or through free agency. My general thoughts are we need to have competition at every position. No one should be considered a starter without proving themselves to be the best at their position. The reality is that you can't upgrade everywhere and just because you bring in a draft pick or a free agent, doesn't mean they will start over the guy already there.

The better question might be whether given who is on the team right now, which positions have the least depth versus ones where we have adequate competition or proven starters. So instead of McClain or Hardy getting one more chance since the reality is that both will be here anyway. Are you happier with the DE depth or the DT depth. Is Hardy a good starter versus McClain and will Cox come in and start versus Coples coming in and starting.

Given that, I am less content with the DE depth than the DT depth right now. I am concerned that we need 3 corners with starting capacity and even with Hogan stepping up, we need another quality corner given that nickel back have to cover running backs and wide receivers with great ability. I am not happy with our linebacker depth given we have one guaranteed starter right now in Anderson. I am okay that we have brought in some competition for free safety but don't think we have much depth at strong safety.

On the offensive side I am good with the offensive line depth and wide receiver. I think we need another QB, and TE. We need a punter and returner on special teams. So whether we get these guys through the draft or free agency there are needs on both sides.

The other issue is whether there is a guy who we just have to have regardless of the depth or incumbents. LIke Kalil if he drops or Jenkins in the second, etc

I agree with all of this. Cap can play nickle, but cant start. Also i think both safeties need upgrade.

Terrell McClain/Sione Fua - I don't think they should be cut but a starter is needed

Captain Munnerlyn/Brandon Hogan - Captain was bad but a victim of being on a bad defense. Don't ditch him but don't start him. Hogan deserves a season, we didn't see much of him

Greg Hardy - Deserves to stay but, based on last season, not to start

David Gettis/Armanti Edwards - Gettis is a beast so yes, AE I would keep him as a QB not as a WR

Thomas Davis - Yes

Sherrod Martin - No

Geoff Hangartner, Mike Pollack - Yes and yes

Jeff Otah, Byron Bell - Otah had better perform this season, Bell deserves another season

I'd like to see Armanti get another chance, but not at WR. I think they should let him be the back up qb. His style is the same style as Cam's. Hes been in the league for awhile now so he understands the game. Maybe use him and cam as a dual qb set on plays. Dump Clausen, Draft Russel Wilson to be 3rd qb.

Your are not serious about that right?

Terrell McClain/Sione Fua - I wouldn't cut either one of these guys yet. I'd rotate them with Edwards and see whats what.

Captain Munnerlyn/Brandon Hogan - I'd only Captain in nickle packages, like his buddy Gilmore, he gets burned in man.

I would like to see a lot more of Hogan. I can't tell yet.

Greg Hardy - Yes I would like to give Hardy another chance, on rotation.

David Gettis/Armanti Edwards - Gettis is a no brainer, YES he'll play. Armanti - At one point, I was thinking that maybe we'd try him at QB, but I'm done.

Thomas Davis - Another no brainer, YES he'll play.

Sherrod Martin - only as a backup

Geoff Hangartner, Mike Pollack - Let them compete for the starter. The loser will be backup.

Clausen - only if we can't get a third backup like Wilson.

If I had to cut anyone on this list, it would be Armanti. He's not used on the roster at all.

Most of these players deserve 2nd shots. I specifically think Otah and Munnerlyn do. There's a lot that can be learned after getting your ass handed to you...they're definitely a long way from being elite level players but both can make an impact on the game. Although I too tend to agree that Cap can't be a good number 2 corner.

Davis shouldn't even be on this list. When he is healthy is guaranteed his spot. However, we should keep him rotating till he is back to 100 percent like someone said above.

Why are we talking cutting players unless their salary is too large at this point and it is a cap move. Seems to me that we will bring in between 80-88 players to camp. We have 71 signed right now. So with the draft choices and UDFA we will easily fill out the roster but can wait to cut many guys until training camp. Certainly not someone who was a starter or in the rotation last year at this point.
