Worth Noting... (Re: Defensive Philosophy)

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

ESPN just had a segment where they asked a group of coaches to name the second most important position on the field (the first, of course, being quarterback).

Several said "pass rusher", but Ron Rivera (offscreen) said it was a cornerback "to take away the quarterback's favorite receiver".

So now you know what the coach thinks on the topic. Agree or disagree? And do you think it says anything about our draft plans?

If it's just the favorite receiver he's referring to, we already have that guy in Chris Gamble.

Wouldn't who ever we pick be his eventual replacement? Remember how Ken Lucas was the baddest CB on the planet and then the very next year less than average?

Can't compare Gamble and Lucas man. Gamble been doin it for longer and is just an overal better corner than Lucas. If we don't go CB in the 1st and Janoris is there in the 2nd you would be stupid not to pick him IMO

Maybe, but we play against more than one team with multiple receiving threats.

Is a single shutdown corner enough in today's pass happy NFL?

two years ago we were discussing whether shutdown corners could even exist with the new rules..

i think he was speaking more to getting the qb out of his comfort zone, taking away his first look and flustering him less than blanketing the entire field with shutdown cbs.

Granted, we're extrapolating from a single sentence.

The one thing I think you could reasonably say from that is that Rivera apparently sees coverage as a higher priority than pressure, but even so, I wouldn't bet on there being a significant gap between the two in his thinking.

or simply that Rivera finds coverage harder to find than pressure......................

    • Mr. 0-2 every year to start the season in his career. Last year was the first year he ever played a week 3 game.
    • The good thing about replacing a bad player is you really have nothing to lose. If their replacement is bad so what, you didn't get much worse and probably saved money.
    • I came over from the old Panthers Insider site. When Fox Sports bought that platform it slowly just started dying plus the guy who ran that site was dealing with some pretty significant health issues so the whole thing just slowly fell apart. Quite a few of us migrated over here. Not sure how many are still around.  I miss that place. It struck a nice balance of having enough active posters to keep productive conversation flowing but didn't have so much traffic that you end up with a lot of trolling BS. This place is getting there though since we shutdown new registrations but at some point we're going to have to open it back up or we'll watch this place slowly die off too as posters fall off for one reason or another. We just have to figure out a way to filter out the spam bots. It was a never ending battle to ban the spam bots to keep then from overrunning the site. You'd think they'd be a little more strategic. I mean, if you fill a site with nothing but spam people are just going to stop coming so it's not a sustainable model. But nope, every one of them makes dozens of duplicate threads filling up pages upon pages as soon as their account goes live.
