Connor Vs. Kuechly

I'm torn over the Kuechly pick .. here's why:

Why would we let Dan Connor go to Dallas for the following contract:

2 years - $6.5 million

Break Down: $2.7 million signing bonus - 2012 $800k - 2013 $3 million - 2014 free agent

And then use our first round pick to sign Kuechly for (approximately):

$12 million (over 4 years) .. he will VERY likely earn a similar amount that Connor will earn next year with Dallas (including his signing bonus)

Here's my dilemma .. if Connor was an above average player .. and was familiar with our system .. and has proven he can play at this level .. why spend more/same on an unproven player?

We could have re-signed Connor and used our first pick on a CB, DT, WR, etc.

Maybe I'm naive .. but I just don't understand how teams let good players go in free agency and then replace them with someone who might be better. Especially with the 9th pick in the draft!!

I'm I the only one who feels this way? My point is .. we already had this guy on our roster (Connor) .. so why waste the draft pick?

(I've rushed putting this post together .. I hope it makes sense)

Conner probably wanted somewhere to start, FOR SURE. I also don't believe he can play on outside, where this guy can, so he's more versatile. I don't think they liked what they saw out of Conner, he had almost a whole season to show what he has and while I think he played OK, I expected more out of him (granted our defense was bad all around).

Besides their skin color, Connor is nothing compared to Kuechly.

You may be right .. BUT .. you may also be wrong

Don't forget .. Connor was two-time all American .. set Penn State's record in tackles .. and won the Chuck Bednarik Award

I don't care what he is. He is slow, unathletic, awful in coverage, and completely worthless in our system.

If we still had John Fox, we would have probably held onto him. Rivera knows poo when he sees it.

Yeah I agree with all of this for sure ... but we would have been fine at LB with Connor is my point

Then we would have had the bonus of using the #9 pick on another position of need.

    • It’s going to get wild after this Sunday.  I would assume Dave has a really smart plan.   Sorta like the AZ plan last year.    After a big turnover heavy  bad game Bryce normally reels it in.  Bryce will have one of his standard 60% for 200 days and the Bryce defenders will use that as a “ I told you he is good” games.
    • Bryce is a really smart kid and I'm sure he knows all the answers to the test but he hasn't been able to overcome his lack of physical tools and other DC's know this and play him accordingly. I think Bryce has good processing but when the correct read is the WR 30 to 40 yards down field and you have a defensive lineman coming at you what can he really do? He just doesn't have the arm to effectively and consistently hurt the defense and I think that's what's gonna do him in.  Pime example look at the INT versus Dallas last year when Thelien was wide open down the seam and Bryce threw it from a clean pocket and the ball was way short. Dc's watched that and knew that Bryce can't throw the ball deep.
    • I'd give Bryce until the trade deadline to prove he's the answer and if he's not I'm dumping him for whatever pick we can get and I'm riding with Dalton the rest of the way.  2 and a half years is enough time to determine if he can be the QB going forward so for Bryce he needs to come out over the next couple of weeks and show that. The other players in the locker room don't wanna waste another year of their careers waiting to see if you'll ever figure it out.  If you took a poll of the players in the locker room I'm sure they'd rather lose with a respected veteran Dalton who at least gives them some creditability versus losing with Bryce who the entire media will say was let down by his supporting cast when in reality it's Bryce's physical limitations that are holding this team back.
