Did Panthers Find Their Superman On Defense?(Nfl.com)

Recommended Posts

WHo the hell wrote this so I can blast his ass for saying the LB position is a weakness on the Panthers. The LB position has been a strenght on Defense for the past 4-5 years. Last years was just a bunch of bad luck with injuries and we even found out because of the injuries the Senn is a pretty could back up and not just a damn Special teams player.

He said it was a weakness last year, is that not accurate?

We making up names for our LB core now?

Beason - Beast (already established)

Kuechly - Clark Kent? (kinda weak nickname)

TD - unbreakable-mr-glass.jpg

Andy - ?

Think we just need a group nickname, like mt rushmore or something not that gay (just trying to start something)

i kid, i kid :)

I think there will be a process, but LK will eventually be the MLB. Beason was drafted to play OLB, but moved inside when Morgan went down. He did a great job there, However, this is a different defense, and with the emphasis on passing in the NFL, the MLB has to be able to cover on all three downs. Kuechly is faster (especially after Beason's surgery) and taller. How often have you seen a QB's pass to a TE in the seam barely clear the MLB's fingertips?

This is not about loyalty to Beason. I have met him and he is a great person, not just a great player. If you can say without question Beason needs to be in the middle and he is the best fit there, then you are making a comment before you know the details and facts.

Kuechly is versatile, but so is JB. If Rivera says in May that Beason is the MLB and Kuechly will play outside, it means little. Just a starting point. He has more of a reason to be loyal to Beason than we do, and he will do what is best for the team. On paper, Kuechly is the ideal fit, but heart and leadership are not factored on paper. We shall see.

I know that most folks think the MLB is the most important LB and that our best player should be there. Just keep in mind that in a 4-3 under plays get funneled to the Will. If you consider that the Mike blitzes 65% of the time then it could make sense for Kuechly to play the Will who rarely blitzes and plays coverage on a lot of plays.

We no longer play cover 2 as the base d. In our old D the mike was asked to be in coverage more. In our more blitz heavy 4-3 both the mike and Sam are blitzing over 50% of downs. The WLB drops in coverage more than the other. One of Luke's strenghs are coverage and therefore he is best suited as WLB( in this system)

MaybI missed read it, I took it as him saying it was the weak spot oin defense. LB last season was not weak compared to the rest of the defense. Dline, and CB's lost a lot of games for us.

The dline's job in the run game is to take up blockers for the LB's to make the tackle. When you have bockers in the LB's territory, the DT's were not doing their jobs.

THe CB's were blowing plays left and right. Captain being one of the weakest spots in the secondary. How many penalties did he get from trying to make up ground after getting burnt.

Maybe I'm just too trusting but I think Riv can sort out who needs to be where, when and what for. Any linebacker that can cover can be called Superman in my book. Categorizing him thusly at this early stage is not only optimistic but wreaks of the scores of butt hurt media parrots who saw Cam as everything but a Superman at this time last year and are attempting to rectify that wrong by complimenting Cam and reaching for a reason to do so by including Luke.

weak sauce Marc Sessler (IMO)
