maybe the S/T players are just having a hard time learning the playbook.

ST play is pretty simple. Problem is we haven't had ST players for years. We really just have thrown out our weak depth and asked them to do the job.

Does anyone know who our starting ST coverage unit consists of? That isn't sarcasm. I don't know who we are using. I hope guys like Martin aren't going to be asked

Almost everytime we have given up a big play on special teams it's because it was the players that aren't going to make the team playing special teams. Can't blame Murphy for guys dropping balls. They did good by bring in the players that are known for special teams in the offseason. I think once the regular season starts we will see how good our ST units can be. People shouldn't believe all they see in preseason. Because the regular season is usually way different. A team can go 0-4 in preseason and then undefeated in the regular season. Don't worry so much about what happens in preseason. Our guys will be ready to go. I'm just happy we walked away from the preseason and camp with our boys healthy.

I'm no ST expert, but it looks to me like our gunners are being too aggressive, trying for the big play. The result is they often overrun the return.

Perhaps if we were just a bit more conservative in coverage it would avoid the long returns. Maybe we wouldn't get the big hits that make Sportcenter, but I'd gladly concede a few extra yards on every return instead of the 2 or 3 returns for TD's we might otherwise expect.

I'm indifferent on the guy. Tonight we have had missed tackles and a hold that allowed the TD that came back.

Josh Thomas(#22) is a specific player who has been there to make a tackle on 2 returns and just didn't. Stanford would have made it if not for being held on the return for a TD that was called back.

The dreadful play could just be the players missing tackles. However, if you look at Murphy's portfolio of work, it says different. Our ST players are out of position and undiciplined on every kick. That is coaching and scheme. We even bought in ST aces this year and it has made absolutely no difference.

It is not just bad player peformance.....it is bad scheme and coaching.

Did you actually watch his ST unit last season....it was the same dreadful play.

Except for the fact that we went out and brought in ST players this season. We got some players who were top ST performers on their previous teams.

the only saving grace he has is that last year was a pretty much unideal situation for a STs coach. a lack of ST talent (thru no fault of his own..just he inherited ST players from a coaching staff that thought they could throw any old scrub in there and do ok) and then whatever players he found he could count on ended up getting promoted to starting positions elsewhere taking away people he could use consistently. also, no offseason for him had to hurt.

this year...different story. i'm going to be a bit lenient considering he's kind of rebuilding, but most things should be worked out by the bye week. if it isn't, my patience will be at an end.
