Why Medlock's Potential Game Winning Miss Is Much Ado About Nothing

Copied from the Rivera's comments on Medlock thread:

After thinking it over, I'm ok with Medlock and his performance tonight. I wasn't expecting him to hit the 56 yarder, he sent his lone <50 yard field goal straight down the middle of the uprights, and he just happened to hook his 50 yard kick. He probably spooked himself a bit on the potential game winner, no doubt, but the Pittsburgh field is also NOTORIOUSLY tough for even veteran kickers (hell, you could see how the field was getting torn up just by players who going low to the field for catches). It's just very, very difficult to hit 50+ yard field goals in Heinz Field.

In fact, if Medlock had hit that 50 yarder, he would have tied the RECORD long by an NFL kicker!

Unlike Three Rivers, the playing surface at Heinz Field is natural grass. The field features underground heating to help the grass survive Pittsburgh's winter climate. As a result, the field is known for its difficult kicking surface; the only field goal over 50 yards was 51 yards, kicked by Pat McAfee of the West Virginia Mountaineers during the Backyard Brawl on November 16, 2006. The NFL record for kicking is just 50 yards, set by Jeff Reed in the 2006 season. In 2006, the NFL Players Association conducted a poll in which the grass at Heinz was selected as the worst grass field in the league.

So Medlock will be fine, just fine.

He boomed the 56 yd attempt. That thing would have been good from 60+. That kick had some heat behind it.

Other than the 50 yd hook, all of his kicks have been clean with plenty of distance. Good end over end rotation. Not that knuckling Mare bs

I don't understand why everyone is freaking out... did everyone expect him to make every single kick?

And, it's not like he missed a THIRTY yarder to win a game, it was a 50 yarder!

Yeah, anyone want to run back to Mare and watch him shank one from 30? LOL

    • Jack Roslovic: Only 2 other UFA, right-handed centers age 28 or under had more points (39) than him- Sam Bennett (51) and Pius Suter (46). There were 4 other centers age 33 and older who scored more: Gireaux (37), Marchand (37), Tavares (34), Granlund (33).  Unless the Canes go old, if they let Jack walk, they won't get a center who scored more.  Thoughts?
    • nope     This is why we come back every year.  Hope springs eternal
    • It's important to differentiate criticism and hate. I can't speak for that individual you quoted. But most people who have been critical of the Tepper's have been so because both of them have made it a point to put themselves front and center and in the middle of team operations and we have been largely horrific more often than not as a result. If people are making derogatory remarks about her that should be met with an appropriate response but if people are being defensive just because she's being criticized all I can say is people should get used to it. Both her and David would have been getting absolutely skewered by the media and the fans if this were a big market franchise. The Lakers are finally being sold off after years and years of public criticism of Jeannie Buss and even though I'm the furthest you could go from being a Lakers fan just about anyone you could meet who is familiar with the NBA would say the criticism was certainly valid.
