Williams flat out doesn't fit

What you fail to mention is that starters can be found other places than in the first 3 rounds and that as long as you find 3 or 4 starters each year it doesn't matter where they come from. Plus you mention the draft only and I mentioned the draft, trades which involve draft picks and free agent pick ups.

No one will argue that 2009 was a bad draft. It happens. But we still have a starter who played pretty well last week in Munnerlyn who was a seventh rounder. Doesn't matter if he was a first rounder or seventh as long as he starts the result is the same.

In 2010 we picked up LaFell, Hardy, and Gettis (who I still think is a player when healthy), that is 2 starters and a contributor which isn't bad when you don't have a first round pick. Given we were in dump mode and tanked the team we didn't pick up free agent folks. Thank Richardson for that, not Hurney.

Finally in 2011 we got back on track, we hit the lottery with Newton and brought in Edwards, Shockey, Olsen, Bell, Hangartner, Senn among many others. That was 6 starters and a contributor at least. I didn't mention Mare, LOL.

Again our philosophy isn't just to build through the draft, it is build through the draft and supplement it with free agents and trades which are reasonable guys. For example getting rid of McClain wasn't an admission that he was a failure, it was an admission that he wasn't progressing as fast as we had hoped and needed to upgrade the position which we did with Edwards from Buffalo. We could have kept him but Rivera and Hurney saw a chance to upgrade and jumped on it.

Guys like Olsen and Murphy are really part of the draft class since they were acquired with future draft picks. Olsen cost us a third this year and Murphy a seventh next.

Wrong. You are always going to have find starters in other places if you miss iin the draft--the fact that sixth rounders are starters does not make them high quality starters. You do not find STARS in the bottom of the draft regularly. If you have to start talking about undrafted free agents and free agents to fill spots where you missed in the draft, your team sucks and that is NOT building throught the draft.

You said, "What part of building through the draft do you not understand?"

How are we building through the draft?

Everette Brown--we have a sixth rounder, an undrafted free agent, and a rookie 4th rounder trying to fill the gap for that WHIFF.

Sherrod Martin--We have a special teamer backup and a special teamer from SF trying to fill that WHIFF.

Jimmy Clausen--We drafted 3 QBs in 2 years.

We sure are going free agency and using multiple picks at one position a lot

Corvey Irvin, Sione Fua, and Terrell McClain. We had 2 sign undrafted free agents (Neblett and Kearse) and 2 free agents. Whiff, Whiff Whiff.

How is this building through the draft again?

#2 CB: Brandon Hogan, Josh Norman, Thomas and Butler. We sure have thrown quality at that key position. Addressed in the draft? On day 3.

I just do not see it, 55. We are not building-we are filling gaps with bodies that were not addressed in the draft..

Well this certainly got awkward.

Bump....not really. Just helped make my point.

Williams without Stewart in the Chud era.

2 games.

Week 1 - 10 TOTAL offensive points

Week 3 - 7 TOTAL offensive points

ain't about what we should be doing, about what we are trying to be.

with Stewart

Week 2 - 35 TOTAL offensive points

2011- 25 pt average

Stewart comes back for Atl...offense comes alive.....as usual.

this all could be just a coincidence.

stewart could come back against atlanta and the panthers can fall flat still...

...then again, they could put up 40 points.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
