Grantland: Punting on 4th-and-1 candidate for worst coaching move of the year

The stats speak for themselves we converted 21-24 of those downs. newton is huge. Our secondary was being torched all game. You go for it and have confidence in your offense because that defense showed the whole game that it could not stop atl.

I don't disagree, I'm just saying it wasn't a coaching blunder to punt the ball.

Since when does one minute become not enough time to make a drive? An offense can do a lot with an entire minute left in a game. I can see giving the ball back to Atlanta on the one yard line with 15-20 seconds left on the clock, no time outs.

Our defense got lucky against Atlanta and we pushed out luck by counting on them one too many times and the results speak for themselves.

This is what I've been saying also, I could at least MIDLY understand if atl was down a touchdown because that would be harder to do with a minute on the clock. However atl, just needed to get into FG position, there is no logical reason to punt the ball in that situation with our defense. NONE

Well, you along with Rivera would have made the wrong move.

Do you think it would draw such harsh criticism outside Carolina if Rivera truly made the right call?

Dude, I do not know what your background in football is, but Rivera made the right call. If you cannot see that, you're a moron.

I'm tired of people saying that punting was the right move if it was the right move,WE would have WON!!

Wow...the ignorance in that statement is amazing.

You can make the right move and it still not work out.

We could have gone for it and made it.

We could have gone for it and not made it and lost.

We could have punted and won.

We could have punted and still lost.

The right decision does not always guarantee a victory.

Clearly his background of football only goes back one year, so we shouldn't expect too much.

How easy it is for message board nerds to come on here an complain when they have never had to make a decision in their life. People who have had to make big decisions at work know better than to see this as a black and white answer.

Yes, as a fan I wanted to see us go for it. But I knew, especially since we just fumbled, that it was going to be a punt.

Punting was not a bad call. Everyone knows if we wouldn't have gotten it they would just do screen pass to turner or tell tony to go out there run 5 to 10 yards and cut back lol that's the only plays they run on offense but including they have a beast kicker it was a smart call. everyone is just complaining now because we couldn't stop them at the 1 with no timeouts. Just think if we gave the ball to anyone of our running backs and they didn't get it yall would sit here and be like why didn't we just punt and make them work for the drive instead of a couple screen passes and a field goal.

Fans always go for it.

The punt was a smart play. Nakamura getting beat was not. Cam failing to convert on 3rd was not. There were a variety of bad plays that ended up negating the good plays over the course of the game. So long as adjustments are continually made I'll be patient. I'm going to need to see better clock management, play calling, and not waiting until the end of a game to get aggressive. Start aggressive and crush the other teams hopes and dreams!

my biggest issue with punting in that situation was that it went against the aggressive style that El Pantera spoke so much about bringing to the team. I'm not saying to go for it on fourth down everytime but if theyre going preach about being aggressive then they need to be aggressive.
