Rivera's explanation of Sunday's "2 min drill"

Just listened to Ron's presser, and he was asked what his thinking was during the last couple minutes of the 1st half... he said that his philosophy in running a 2 min drill from your 20 yd line is that you do not call timeouts until you get close to the 50.... said you don't want to leave time on the clock for the opposition....

Yeah, I heard it at the time. What he didn't address is that teams run the hurry up offense until they need to use a timeout. We didn't. We operated with no sense of urgency whatsoever.

I'm sorry Ron. In my book, you wussed out. You were afraid we'd make a mistake, so you didn't go for it. Maybe we get 7 points there and easily win. Maybe we get 3 and squeak out a close one. Maybe we throw a pick 6 and lose the game. So what? We lost anyway.

Even after you said all of that... There were 11 players on the field (all vets) (2 Team Captains) that failed to call a timeout as well.

Chalk it up to a learning experience that will NEVER be forgotten

In theory, it would have worked. However, no sense of urgency. We wasted 10 seconds between plays at one point. You take one when you have 3. After that, then you wait till you break the 50. Ideally, it takes no more than 2 plays to go from the 20 to the 50. We didn't do that. We have to burn a timeout there. That would have bought us enough time to draw something up and get a big chunk play. What the actual fug were we thinking there?

    • Reasonable. I mean I didn’t see a clear path to relief this season myself. As I have typed already, I think the QB FA class is more interesting next season and that draft is supposed to be stacked as well. There just weren’t many options this year.  When you have Tepper to contend with you have to tread lightly around this unless you are 100% certain and willIng to stake your job on it.   There were a couple of outings that helped Bryce a lot in terms of  thinking maybe he can do this, and if you are a supporter you are giving them a lot of weight. You are likely to think just get him some more help and he can do that every week. Which I think Tepper falls into that category.  And the playoffs, division champs, regardless of the way I see that, the supporters will also give that a lot of weight.    And the big one, the atmosphere In BOA for that WC game, Tepper had to be soiling himself over that. If you pulled Bryce out right now you had better be right and your new guy had better make the playoffs and look good doing it or you will be gone and your chance to build your old team back into respectability will be gone too.  So here we have Pickett on a one year deal, and Grier and King. I understand it.
    • Well, seeing as we play the Lions at home this year, pretty sure that rumor isn't true.
    • Totally possible imo, I also caught that snippet from Morgan where he said “If” we sign him. The lack of competition says otherwise tho 🤷‍♂️
