What would you do

Ok, it's January 2013, panthers didn't make the playoffs. Hurney is fired...you are the new GM. What actions would you take between January 2013 and August 2013.

Here is what I would do,

Trade D- Will for a veteran safety

Trade Smitty for a defensive tackle

Pay whatever money it takes to a proven winner like parcells, dungy, gruden, cowher

Once thenew coaches are hired, I'll give them full say on any football decisions....whatever player they wanna bring in, I'm on it..if they wany any player gone that is not on board with their plan, let me know and i'll stamp that player's ticket out of the team

if we don't win a superbowl in 3 years, i'll fire myself....unless i'm fired by then already...lol

Fundamental flaws in those GM actions, hypothetically or course:

The DWill trade is predicated on getting someone to take on his contract or give up anything meaningful for a RB with declining numbers and some years on him. I think that would be unlikely.

The Smitty trade is predicated on someone giving up something meaningful for him. I find that to be unlikely as well.

Straight up player for player trades are rare anyway. It's not as easy as saying "trade this for this" - there has to be a partner who not only has what you want but wants what you have. Draft picks are a more likely currency here.

Assume you hire Gruden and let him bring in whoever he wants. What's to say you don't have 10 QBs in camp because QBs are the bee's knees?

How about running out any player not immediately on board...that could end your hypothetical team with less players than it needs. You'd then have a team full of whoever you could find to fill the gaps who might buy the system immediately but is lacking the talent needed to make that system work...then you're firing yourself in 3 years.

And my main concern is what if you load your team up with Vets by trading away draft picks and build for immediate success. What happens when all those vets get old at the same time after they flash in the pan? That strategy did not build a long term successful organization when we did it in the mid 90s.

Our current GM isn't doing it right - that much is easy to see. But it's going to take a lot more than a few sentences worth of "hey I'd do this" to say what right would be.

1st off i'm not bringing in some old retread head coach. They rarely workout. What i want is a young OFFENSIVE minded coach with older/veteran assistants who are good teachers. I like the way Pittsburgh went with the young unknown Tomlin but surrounded him with seasoned assistant coaches. This is a passing league but the team Will run the ball and play to Cams strengths. Play action and the deep pass are a must. I actually like the New York Giants offense a great deal so the young Sean Ryan will be high on my list for head coach.

2nd, Kuechly is the middle linebacker/. If it means trading Beason so be it.

3, I'm drafting a left tackle with the 1st pick and moving Gross to right. He needs to be replaced anyways. Fixing the OL will be my 1st concern when it comes to the players.

4, I like the front seven, and i'm ok with the cornerbacks but i WILL FIND safeties who will do their job. They don't need to be all pro or pro bowlers but they will be better than "special teams standout".

5, Carolina needs a big stud wideout in the J Jones H Nicks mold. Thru trade, draft or a free agent i'm finding one.

These things can be fun despite the depressing reality of playing them this early in the season...so here's my thingamajigger:

First off, if Hurney is fired after the season, I don't see a scenario where Rivera would still be our coach...

...In this case, target a GM/Coaching package that seems to have an idea of an actual direction to take Cam and the franchise

-Other than the expected mentions incoming of DeCosta, look to maybe a Ted Sundquist or Kevin Abrams for GM

-A few HC candidates: Greg Roman, Winston Moss, Mike Zimmer, or maybe Keith Butler

-Actually go after secondary, o-line, wide receivers, and defensive line talent that aren't a shot in the dark type whether a vet or a draftee (basically, no dipsh*t moves for a project, "he'd be a first if he wasn't injured", "this vet is gonna come back 100%" types)

-Go defense with the 1st and 2nd draft picks (maybe 3 in a row)

-Get a Kaepernick type or something decent to have behind Cam to groom and come in if necessary

-We'll have that Cam kid still at QB with hopefully a coaching staff that can teach him how to run a 2-minute drill and make proper pre-snap changes/adjustments.

Random extras:

-Amp up this secondary for the love of god

-Restructure/dump or do something with these RB contracts

-Find some athletic basketball types for both the DE and TE positions

-Get a damn wide receiver or two in both the FA and draft

I'd have to learn the cap rules lol. I'd try to do something with Dwill, TD, and Beason. I love those guys and hate to get rid of them, but honestly that money could go somewhere other than RB and LB. If I could free some cap I'd apply it to the secondary. I have faith in our Dline since they are young and developing. Draft CB, OL, DL, and S as the needs; other than that BPA. Id hire a HC that I knew had passion and showed it. Someone to fire up our players. Panthers are kind of pouty right now and I dislike that.

Then the season would start and I would realize I suck at everything I do. Would resign by game 6.

- See what I can get for Williams. If there is a good enough offer, take it.

- Draft/look into FA for OL and DBs.

- Bring in a young, excited OC capable of utilizing our running game AND the passing game, as well as Cam's skillset overall.

- Move Rivera to DC, bring in a HC who has a little fire to him that wants to win NOW rather than 4 years from now.

- Try to make a quick, drastic improvement at WR if at all possible via the draft. If I can't, so be it, our receivers are good enough, but a solid, young replacement for Smitty is what I'm looking for. Somebody to take over games if need be.

- Wait for the wins.

Clean house....and redefine what our core is we are building around.

New coaching staff as well.

clean house with coaches, or players?

completely cleaning house means several years of rebuilding. IMO we need someone who can step in and make a couple of key adjustments and work with the core of talent we've been building around for several years.

We don't need to clean house at all. We have the players to win and a lot of them are young. We just need a change a general manager. Just somebody that can build a winning team and give smart contracts. We also need to change a new coaching staff. Coaches that are enthusiastic and can get the most out of our players without being entimidated by them and too scared to say anything to them. I would try to trade Deangelo. He provides very little value too us. I would honestly take a 5th round pick for him if I were GM. That's probably the best we could get anyways. I'd also try to trade Beason for a couple picks or a 1st rounder. That's all I can think of right now.

Both.

And rebuilding doesn't take several years in the NFL. All you need is a QB and we have one....you can win year 1 of a rebuild. Ask Atl and tons of others

I would complete clean house with the coaching staff. To a degree, I would clean house with players...Marty "projects" are all gone. Guys like Clausen, Edwards, safties etc are gone. The RB and LB situation would resolve itself as well. The core would shift from RB/LB to important positions.
