Resume of a Good GM....

#1 is not important. Most teams, ours included, have cap specialists on staff. So Marty had someone reporting to him that managed the cap. Marty is the guy that made the personnel decisions.

The ability to hire and manage good football people is the #1 requirement.

I gotta put football knowledge first.

Without that, none of the other stuff matters

Without the finance portion, you get a team that is paying marginal players a ton and find yourself in cap trouble year after year.

Sound familiar?

Without football knowledge, you don't know what a player is worth.

You do if you have an entire staff letting you know how well players are doing.

I am not saying he can be football illiterate, but he/she doesn't need to be great talent evaluators. He needs a qualified staff that handles that.

Without a doubt the most important characteristic is being able to manage people and multiple personalities with sometimes conflicting wishes and desires. He has to be a good decision maker with the ability to inspire others and a clear vision of what we need to be successful. Obviously knowing the finance piece is important as is the contract piece but we could hire a bean counter as a GM and it would be a disaster. GMs have to manage people much more than simply being a cap manager or even a football guru. You can hire a cap specialist and an attorney to manage the language for example but the art is in the negotiation and that takes a people person. Seems to me the GM has to have a vision which he can sell to others and get them to buy into it. He is the face behind the franchise who has his hand in everything.
