Why the New Offense?

Searched through the forum and couldn't find this. Just curious if anyone has a legit theory or if it has been explained somewhere by Rivera or Chud and I missed it!

It is as clear as day that the biggest difference from last year to this is that the offense has changed in a big way to the read option and this has resulted in monumental failure. There must be a reason we 1) dediced to go to this in the first place and 2) we haven't gone back to our offense of a year ago.

I remember reading how Chud was the best OC in the league and that he would be snatched up as a HC in no time... now he is (according to the huddle) the worst OC in the league and should hit the bricks. Something has to give.

Chud got lazy....just putting the ball in Cam's hands. His emphasis is on "gadget" and crazy plays....makes him stand out more. Build off the hype generated last year that the mad scientist is a great play caller.

What got lost in his big chunk offense that is pretty much the Cam show....is what is needed to actually win games and to help a young QB grow.

Said all offseason Chud was overrated and was getting by off what Cam was doing.....I still think that is true. We are seeing why he was fired in Cleveland. Failure to adjust and realize he is part of the problem

Not sure how this is gonna go on the huddle but I think it's definetely a legit question and one that I have no answer for. It doesn't make sense how you turn a rookie QB loose to sling the ball for over 4,000 yards in his rookie year but decide to confine him to read option plays in his second year... I don't think that was Hurney's doing, which means that we'll continue to get more of the same, unless they're scared now and decide to stop fixing things that weren't broke.

That makes sense... But has this really not been addressed by the coaching staff in any interviews? This is a huge philosophical difference in the way you run an offense and to have a top 10 offense last year it makes it almost implausable at best and incompetent at worst!

I expect there to be somewhere Rivera saying "yeah, we've got a new philosophy for the offense this year that will enhance Cams skills and help detract from his mistakes"

It's baffling to me they haven't given up on it... The wildcat worked for a while for teams like Miami, and us for that matter, but once teams had an opportunity to study how to stop it the success rate went down the tubes. The read option is no different. Gimmick play that deserves to be run no more than 2 to 3 times a game not the basis of the Panther offense.

Yeah well when you look back now they talked all off-season about Chud's "playbook". They kept going on about how huge it was and how he specifically tailored it to Newton's strengths and tried to bring in what made him successful at Auburn and a whole bunch of other mumbo jumbo. Who would've thought it would have failed so badly?

Lol, so apparently Chud designed nothing but option plays all off-season because he got a hard-on on how well they worked last season and thought it'd be a smart fuging idea to base the whole offense around it... I seriously don't think he had the foresight to develop a plan B in case this experimental turd didn't work out.

... That's my theory anyways.

Chud seems to be a one year guy. Then a long term bad solution.

My opinion? Chud took too much away from the Tampa games last year. Both were late in the year when we had incorporated more read option plays, and both were blowouts.

Apparently he didn't take into consideration that Tampa had quit on their coach. As to why he hasn't changed yet, for that I have no answer.

Maybe I've missed this but has anyone directly questioned the staff in interviews about this? They're clearly avoiding wanting to change it. I just can't believe its based on pure stubbornness and laziness on Chud's part. There has to be something more.

We will likely never know because these fuging moron reporters won't ask good questions. Instead, they'll blame everything on the players. "Why isn't X player doing well? Did X player's mistake cost you? Do you need to replace X player?" Why not ask the REAL question of, "why are the play calls so vastly different from last year to now? Why does it seem we're seeing the exact same play-calling with the exact same results? Why is there no adjusting to the types of plays called or the game-plan as a whole?"

No, no reporter is going to do that, because it's not as compelling as "Cam is in a sophomore slump" and other fuging idiotic headlines.

Yeah, I don't understand why that question hasn't come up. Most of the local reporters seem afraid to ask any tough questions.

As to the stubbornness, think back to Mike Martz, another "genius". He almost got Kurt Warner and Marc Bulger killed in St. Louis by stubbornly sticking with a minimum protection scheme. Then he went to Chicago and did the same thing with Cutler. Some guys just think they are smarter than everyone else and refuse to consider otherwise.

    • Someone correct me- doesn't Dave have a six year contract??? I think Dan Morgan does as well..... that's the price you have to pay once you get a rep for firing HCs....
    • Brother re-check that guarantee...my page shows 30mill.....thats means he's staying in my book for at least til the end of 2026.  Im going to be my normal honest self, besides watching like half of the SB, I didn't know the guy. My guess is Panthers have a "planned model of paying players" and they almost had to spend a chunk of space on a DLman after Dbrown injury season gave them a nightmare out-come of worst D in NFL scoring. Once Milton got above Dbrown payments, they went with the plan B. A player whom the "co-GM" put his name with. Brad said turk would not be a problem off-field and leader, which the Panthers need badly. I dug in with the google-fu, I found out  I also found him playing lots of NT, which was shocking given the small frame. He seems ready for a bigger role and had a great SB too. IDK, I feel Dan Morgan was dead set on not going into this season without more DL depth and its there. The real deal is this, nearly all FA take one year to "adjust". I think turk is trying too hard and causing injuries as a result for his contract. Dbrown called turk "strong as hell" and I know for a fact Dbrowns has insane core and strength numbers. They lift together with the 50 LB difference...... you always lift with a guy who's similar in strength cause you can leave on the 8 wheels, let the other guy lift while you rest and go after him.  I do wish he had a better beginning to his panther career, 3 games for him to do so and it would cover up the low points if he made a few plays.... Again it felt like they almost had to make move/spend $$$ and Morgan was going to have DL depth this season no matter what...My best guess.
