Needs Assessment: Rate the positions in order of need

Thought I would get some insignts from you all. After 8 weeks, where do we need the most help? I think our draft would have a lot to do with filling these positions. Here is my take:

1. Wide Receiver: I think we need to move Smitty to the slot and get a true #1. Throw in Lafell, Gettis, Murphy, and Adams, and we finally give Cam some weapons and take the focus off Steve Smith, who will be 34. I prefer a free agent here.

2. Defensive Tackle. We need more push up front. A run stopper who can collapse the pocket. We have a nice set of DEs now that will get better with some inside help. Edwards could be a cap casualty. I think the draft is pretty solid at DT.

3. Right Guard. Our run blocking is terrible. While I expect Silatolu to become a beast, we need a plow at RG. Hangartner ain't it. Maybe a stud falls to the fourth.

4. Free Safety. A defensive QB who can run the secondary. An intelligent hitter. Love to take a S in th second round.

5. Cornerback. If Norman and Thomas continue to play well, and we start getting pressure up front, this need could change.

If you consider where we will be drafting, I expect that we will be somewhere between 10 and 12 again. We have 7 games against teams with losing reconds down the stretch. We could win 5-6 games easily. Expect 6-10, 7-9.

How do you all see it?

I pretty much agree with chuck. Considering this draft's strengths, I think our best 1st pick would be Lotulelei or Hankins, even if our DTs aren't looking too bad right now. We need young talent at the spot and this year's group look as good as a group as I've seen in a long time (Star+Hankins+Jenkins+Williamsx2+Short+others I'm probably forgetting > Suh+McCoy+whoever else came out that year). WR group this year looks to be weakish, lotta mid-range guys.

OG

DT/NT

FS

WR

CB

OT

Guard is never a glamor pick, but we HAVE to run the ball. I agree with this, but I think it is very important that we move Steve Smith to the slot. He is tough, gets open, and would be a tough matchup IF we had a stud outside. That would open the offense up.

But we HAVE to run it. Hangartner is weak,

OG- We really need interior help on the O-line

WR- Smitty is getting closer to retirement. Need a legit successor ASAP

DT- Dwan has been a nice addition but we need to solidify the interior of our defense.

FS- One word "Nakamura"

CB- Norman has been ok and Gamble might not be back.

OT- Gross getting older etc, etc.

TE- We need another TE. Offense runs better from 2 TE set. Would JIZZ if we can snap up Walker in FA.

OG - RG has been a major problem more often than not.

FS - Nakamura is terrible and should never start again.

WR - Steve Smith is getting too old to be our #1.

DT - We need more than an aging Ron Edwards and Fua.

The way the early mock drafts are looking we might be drafting a DT to replace Ron as the starter. Not our biggest need imo, but sometimes you have to go BPA.

    • Got to give some credit to the coaching staff on these. You can grab top talents but without good coaching, they just fizzle out. We've seen that a lot around here.
    • Oh, no TV for tonight's game unless you have the NHL Network, I believe. I could be wrong, hopefully?
    • Early returns are great and exciting but also worth noting that Gettleman had a few drafts that looked incredible early on and wound up mostly sucking (2014 mainly). Also PFF; grain of salt, etc.    I'm completely sold on Tet being a stud, knocked a high pick out of the park like we needed to and always should. Nearly sold on Scourton. Not sold on Princely but he had flashes. Not sold on Etienne as more than a 3rd stringer and special teamer, but that's not terrible for his draft position. Big fan of Ransom and think he'll be a starter.  Cam Jackson : IDK, I see limited upside but we didn't see much of him Evans was a nice find for draft position and he had a great rookie year for a late round rookie TE with plenty of veteran competition. Not sure about his upside though, seems like best case is a long term #2/3 TE, which isn't bad. Jimmy Horn, personally I didn't see a damn thing from him that impressed me all year. And he got a lot of opportunities. Pulling for the kid, but not convinced he's an NFLer.   UDFA: Fitzgerald was an amazing find
