The truth is Long has not been playing up to his previous standards. The truth is Long is in the third season of a progressive decline because he played better in 2009 than in 2010, he played better in 2010 than 2011 and this has been his worst season so far.

Publicly, Long is putting on a good face and chiseled chin on his troubles. When he was asked this week if he’s playing as well now as last season he said, “yes,” without hesitation.

But privately, everyone knows that isn’t right. The truth is Long’s play has fallen so far off from an elite level he is more often mired in mediocrity than lifted up in excellence.

He has allowed four sacks this season.

His run-blocking grades have rarely been the best among Miami’s offensive linemen. He no longer is playing like the best tackle in the NFL. He’s not even playing like the best tackle in his conference (Houston’s Duane Brown is that) or division (D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Nate Solder have been better).

The illustrations of Long’s 2012 struggles are startling and almost painful to watch.

You saw him struggle against Indianapolis linebacker Dwight Freeney in a loss to the Colts. Long could not consistently keep up with Freeney’s quickness and spin move, and gave up a sack, a couple of pressures and also committed a false-start penalty.

Afterward, Long made the point that Freeney is a great player who has given many offensive tackles difficult days.

That was true five years ago. Now Freeney is 32 years old and that sack against Long was his only one in November. He has two sacks this season and that ranks him tied for 97th in the NFL.

Nah.. From what I see, he seems to have trouble staying on the field. We don't need any more injury prones.. If the new gm comes in and guts the team to make moar cap room, I'd rather him make a splash in fa on another need based on whose available.

If it was Joe Thomas we were taking about, then fug yeah

    • I can understand the logic. Going for 2 made sense the first time considering how far down we were. Then you don't get it and are basically forced to go for it the second time, too. Way down the list of concerns we have, IMO.
    • Rozeboom needs to get better before he's a JAG.
    • The successful teams in the NFL right now have one thing in common: Patience. Not just with their QB, but with every facet of the program. There are going to be successes and failures, but no one panics and makes reactive decisions. Look at the Eagles, the Bills, the Ravens, the Packers, and hell, even the (newly successful) Lions. All of them showed patience with their QB's growth, let their coaches do their jobs, have drafted well, developed their own players, and plugged holes in their roster and organization with players and situations that made sense. That's what we need. And if that isn't what we have now, we need to make moves to get it there. If that means they need to blow it up to start over, then blow it up and start it over the right way. If that means to change their approach from top to bottom, change it now. But the blueprint of success is out there in the league, teams just think they know better, or they don't have the discipline to follow through.
