Will Beason be a Panther next year?

If we release him this off-season his cap hit would be 12.75 million. If we keep him his cap hit will be 9.5 million in 2013 and go up to almost 11 million in 2014, and 12 million in 2015. If we june 1st the cut, it costs us around 6.4 million in dead cap space for 2 years.

The problem with restructuring is that it converts salary into a signing bonus which increases the cap in future years. So we could lower his salary from next year's 5.25 million to something like 2.5 million by converting 3 million of the salary to a signing bonus which increases the signing bonus in future years from 4 million to 5 million.

His cap next year goes from 9.5 million to 6.5 million but it bumps up his future yearly signing bonus cap from 4 to 5 million without considering the salary.

Aside from the $20M signing bonus already in Beasons bank, only $5M is guaranteed. Correct me if I am wrong here, but does that not mean that we can cut him without having to pay him more than $4M? (Assuming he has $1M guaranteed each year from now on).

So I do not think we have to change $5.25M into $2.25 salary and $3M bonus to match $5.25M. It should be enough to keep the $1M salary and add $2M signing bonus on top for each year left on the contract.

The will mean a total payout of $33M during the 6 years. Not $50 that was the top figure but still $8 more than was guaranteed (and as those extra $8 is payed as a signing bonus he gets even if he is hurt and cannot play).

Should be doable, unless I have missed something how it works?

It's absolutley staggering at how bad Marty Hurney was at his job.

When June 1 releasing our once prized LB might be the best move when you way the cost/benefit result..

It's no wonder DWill and Stew make it very public thier desire to stay in Carolina. They want to play out their contracts as Hurney gave it to them.

I doubt Marty did this .Those payouts for Beason ,Johnson, and dwill have JR written all over them

I hope so, the guy came into the league as a WLB and after he got settled in he played well when he was asked to do that a few years back.

Beason is a team guy and he genuinely loves the Panthers organization, I doubt he'll have any problem with moving to WLB and his experience and leadership will be incredibly valuable.

I hate to say this, but I don't ever think Beason will be the same. He should have been healthy this season. Being out of football for almost 2 years is not good. He'll be a Panther next year but my expectations are very low. He might not even be a starter unless he can beat out Anderson and that is a big if.

The problem isn't the guaranteed money. That has likely all been paid already (or at least the vast majority). Money out of pocket isn't the problem unless you are JR or one of his partners. The problem is the charge against our salary cap.

In a nutshell, signing bonus is always divided up equally over the years of the contract from a cap standpoint. It doesn't matter that it was paid up front. A charge hits our books every year for $4 million as a result of the original bonus. So if Beason is cut or traded, we have to absorb the $12 million of the signing bonus that has not yet been allocated to the cap.

I know. But I don't see how that matters here. We can take that $13M hit next year if we really have to and beason refuse to reconstruct.

Yes, we can take the hit, but that is a lot to absorb. If we cut or trade him with a June 1 designation, only $4 million of the $12 million hits next year with the balance hitting in 2014.

There really isn't a painless solution to the problem.

All things considered, Beason looked pretty bad this year and is definitely still healing from his injuries. Luke Kuechly is a budding star and will start at MLB until he's hurt or plays like crap for an extended period of time. Beason should stay as depth and as a rotational player. If he gets healthy, start him on the outside.

You are confusing salary which is due with cap space which allows you to take the signing bonus and pro rate it over the life of the contract. If you cut him all of the remaining signing bonus, which he has been paid for, becomes part of the cap space in the year you cut him which equates to 4 million dollars a year for 3 years or 12 million dollars. That is more than he will cost as a cap hit in signing bonus and salary next year for a player that won't be playing or in other words, dead cap space. If you cut him the next year then 8 million will escalate. The only ability you have to mitigate the amount is if you declare it a June 1st cut which allows to spread the hit over 2 years (6 million per year) but it still gives you a ton of dead cap space.

Keep in mind that we are already at the cap for next year so taking a 13 million hit or even a 6 million hit for someone not on the team is a huge issue.

Actually the cap hit as a June 1st designation will be 6 million for 2013 and 2014 which is the 3 years of 4 million apiece split between 2 years.

as much as i like the guy, that's too much to pay for a guy that spent two years in a row on IR and whose primary job (MLB) was overtaken by a rookie. it sucks that he lost the job being hurt, but once you've seen keek play, you can't turn back.

it would hurt to cut him and i doubt he'd find a starting gig or at least a contract anywhere close to what he got here and it would really hurt to pay him $12mil to not play, but haven't we paid him about $10mil for not playing the last two years already?

the new GM is going to have to make a seriously tough decision with beason. either cut him loose and swallow the $12mil, but be able to go forward after that hit... or....redo that contract completely to one that is more cap friendly and more in line with what he would actually get with another team.

the smart, but tough call would be to just cut him because you can't keep paying a backup MLB/starting OLB over $10mil a year.

Beason should be treated like Davis was. Rotate him in at first to make sure he's all healthy and can handle it, then ink him in at the Sam.

his contract would have to be handled similarly....only it would be quite a few more millions taken out of his future pocket.
