Allstate... good hands?... not so much...

Anyone have experience with/work for in the past/etc. Allstate insurance company?

We're paying like $300 a month just in car insurance from an accident my wife had a year and a half ago...

She's currently driving a 08 Ford Fusion, and the other car on the policy which isn't driven as much is my 07 Chevy Avalanche...

We got a quote to add both vehicles to our Nationwide policy (currently our home and our RV) and it comes out to about $150 a month...

Before we got the quote, we stopped by Allstate to get our policy printed out (accidentally left the house without it) and the lady at the office asked why... We told her we were shopping around, and that we were considering cancelling and taking our business elsewhere. She then told us that we'd have to pay a cancellation fee, which she couldn't tell us at the time what it would be (maybe it depends on some formula?)...

I've never seen this in a written form in our policy, and I've never been told this can/will happen.

WTF?

I'm tempted to call them and cancel, and tell them to eat it when they ask for fees or wtf ever else...

Cancelation fee? What the fug is that? Just don't pay that premium, they'll cancel that poo for free pretty quickly. Hah!

Won't that put a nick on my pristine credit rating though?

I'm afraid my 819 will drop to 809... lol

To my knowledge, not paying your insurance premium and subsequently letting it cancel doesn't hurt your credit rating. It's not a credit thing in any way. You pay your premiums up front each month, so when you fail to pay one for a month they just cancel the policy. They will calculate the earned premium and if you owe money for time covered they will bill you. If you don't pay that last bill then, yes that will hurt your credit. But just allowing your insurance to cancel by virtue of not paying your monthly premium? Nope.

I used to work for Allstate in the call center in Charlotte.

1. There is no cancellation fee, it's a scare tactic independent agents use to keep their residuals coming in.

2. Do NOT cancel your policy until you have another policy in place- a lapse in coverage could drastically increase your premium with other companies on top of the legal ramifications.

3. While most big companies check your credit they don't report to the bureaus unless you go to collections.

4. Because of the accident you are now "high risk" drivers, so they raise your premium to force you to go elsewhere. The agents hate it, but they're not the ones paying out claims either.

Give Progressive a call, I was always most impressed with them. Allstate, like most companies, is good as long as you fit the book of business they're trying to build at that particular time.

While there is no cancellation fee, If you paid your premium in full for the term you may get shorted on your refund if you switch companies. NC uses a pro-rated formula on policies that terminate before policy period does. Depending how far into the policy period you are will make a difference in your refund. If you are paying month to month, don't worry about it.

I was with Nationwide for years, I'm with GMAC these days because my mother-in-law is my agent.

I will say this for GMAC - My recent accident, if you remember, the woman who was at fault had a canceled insurance policy so I've had to file all the damages through my own insurance under my uninsured drivers coverage.

GMAC gave me a check for my car that was 1100 more than I payed for the thing over a year ago, they are also compensating me more than fairly on my injury settlement and lost wages.

    • I was watching a YouTube and it was said that scout and GM insider types were saying the NIL had killed rounds 4-7. I don’t know that I buy it, seems like it might for a year or maybe two but then those guys have to move on.  NCAA is apparently about to give 5 years of eligibility. It is gonna skew those entrants older maybe.
    • Miller being less raw and more pro ready makes sense of why they picked him. With us having a capable starter in Walker the lower floor higher ceiling player makes sense for us as well. I agree with that.
    • I'm from Michigan and have had this discussion with my Lions friends, and they all agree with me, they were never going to take Freeling over Miller.  As, yes, you are correct, they could have left Sewell at RT and taken Freeling, but they are in a SB contention window right now. An OL with Freeling at LT and Sewell at RT is not as strong as Sewell at LT and Miller at RT would be for this upcoming season and likely at least next year as well. 5 years it could be looked back upon as a long term "mistake" to take Miller over Freeling, but for a franchise like the Lions, you can't worry about the long term when you have current SB aspirations.  It's all about maximizing their current SB window over the next 1-3 years. And it's not about style, it's about day 1 readiness, and a lot of "experts" aren't even sure if Freeling is ready to play Week 1 yet at the position he's used to, let alone switching to a side he hasn't played before, but a career starting RT is going to be more than ready to fill that role for them Week 1. I'm 100% convinced that if our draft positioning was swapped, we'd have still taken Freeling, they'd have still taken Miller, and both teams would have got the OT that they preferred due to what each team needs right now and what their current realistic aspirations are for the 2026 season. We're in a position where we can let our drafted OT sit and learn for a bit, they needed a week 1 starter, for me that's where this discussion becomes very easy to understand why each team took the player they did.
