Rivera is safe per Yahoo.com

Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports "hears" that Panthers head coach Ron Rivera is "safe" and will not be fired after the season.

Cole follows that up by saying that "there's more talk" that interim general manager Brandon Beane will get the full-time job. This report goes against what NFL Network's Michael Lombardi said earlier in the week when he said Rivera would "certainly" be fired on Monday, but we'd trust Cole's source more than Lombardi's personal opinion. Carolina enters Week 17 having won four-of-five games, and the team has a chance to finish at 7-9 should they beat the Saints on Sunday. Rivera has the Panthers defense sitting at No. 8 in the league, and after a slow start, Cam Newton has been stellar over the past month or two, getting the offense up to a respectable No. 17 in the NFL.

The Beane/Rivera combo would be absolutely disastrous. If we bring in a GM and he decides to give Rivera another shot to prove he hasn't wasted 2 years of this franchise's time, then so be it. I'll support Rivera for another year. But for God's sake we have to make a real attempt at a real, NFL experienced GM this time. Not some sportswriter, not some intern or whatever Beane was doing before halfway through this season.

I just pray Cole's "source" is Rivera or Beane's agent and there's nothing to it.

Lombardi also said this morning that he is still hearing Rivera is not safe. Lombardi must have a inside source because he keep repeating that Andy, Norv, and Rivera will be let go.

I really don't think this will happen, I really don't think we are that dumb.

I'll come out and say right now that the Beane/Rivera combo will have us picking top 10 every season, and result in said top 10 picks slowly but surely leaving this team.

    • I'll say 6. I don't know that we learned a whole lot about this team during preseason that we didn't already know. We didn't play the starters enough to really get a feel for what to expect. We had one good drive against the Browns, one 3-and-out and two 3-and-outs against the Texans. That's an extremely small sample size across 3 games regardless of performance. My camp/preseason takeaways: Jalen Coker might be the best WR on this team and is certainly no worse than #2. Nic Scourton is going to be a good player for us. Possibly very good. Bobby Brown was our best free agent addition and will do more to help the defense than anyone. Jack Plummer isn't an NFL QB. Not even a practice squad guy. Having anyone other than Canales and Evero call plays was a really stupid and pointless idea. Our depth is largely non-existent, especially on defense. The three areas we actually DO have depth are on the OL, in the WR corp. and at RB. I can't fathom why Dan Morgan didn't do more to upgrade ILB during the offseason. We better hope Lathan Ransom steps up at FS because if he doesn't we have a massive hole there. For all the hype surrounding Sanders and Evans, Tommy Tremble is still the best TE on the roster. I'm only slightly less enthusiastic going into the regular season than I was a month ago. I think our starters on offense are solid and we should be pretty good there unless Bryce totally regresses. On defense, we're probably bottom 3rd in the league if 100% healthy and significantly worse than that if injuries become an issue. We badly need at least two of our rookies to become high-level players early (ideally one of the pass rushers + Ransom) and at least 2 of our free agent additions (ideally Moehrig + Bobby Brown) to be significant upgrades over last year. Call me pessimistically optimistic 😆
    • 2010 was worse. Not much worse but worse.
    • Lol since 2017 the Panthers are 47-85,    Also since 2017 the Giants are 40-91-1   Lol
