i used to have this teacher that was pretty old who would try and pretend he was reading a book but still keep an eye on everyone one and without fail one of two things would happen...he'd get interested in what he was pretending to read and not look up again or he'd fall asleep and drool all over himself.

If Ross insists on picking his own coach, he's severely limiting his options. The only teams meeting that criteria are Arizona, San Diego, and (possibly) Jacksonville if they'll fire Malarky.

If he comes here and Rivera has one more year, that's win/win for him. If Rivera loses, then he's fired and Ross gets to hire his own staff. But if Rivera wins, Ross gets some credit for fixing things.

The Giants have shuffled the deck at the top of their pro personnel department. Dave Gettleman is going from director of pro personnel to senior pro personnel analyst while his former assistant, Ken Sternfeld, has been named the new director of pro personnel.

Effectively, the change means Gettleman will no longer be traveling for scouting purposes.

“My role moving forward will be strictly player evaluation,” he said in a team release. “Once the season begins, my first responsibility will be to get all the practice squad guys [in the NFL] graded. From there we'll start working on unrestricted free agents. It's a little bit of a restructuring in the way the pro personnel department operates. I thought at this point in my career it was time to take a step back and re-evaluate. We've been very successful.”

Gettleman served as director of pro personnel since 1999 and was assisted by Sternfeld for the last 10 seasons.

“Dave has been a great mentor for myself and Kenny,” said general manager Jerry Reese, another of Gettleman's former assistants. “He is a true professional that knows the business and he has the Super Bowl rings to back it up.”

Gettleman has been involved with six Super Bowl teams, three of which won a Lombardi Trophy* (Buffalo Bills 1990-1991, Denver Broncos 1997* and the Giants in 2000, 2007* and 2011*).

Sternfeld was a jack-of-all trades with the New England Patriots before joining the Giants in May of 2012, primarily working in the scouting department. He also has over 20 years of pro and college scouting experience.
