What do Nick Fairley, Suh, Alualu, Glenn Dorsey, McCoy and Dareus have in common?

OH I KNOW !!!!! Let me answer, they are 1st round DT's who's teams still blow really hard despite their efforts. DT looks like a great investment....

NT's just dont have that big of an impact on the game ie its not hard to find guys to help stuff the run and hold the point of attack.

Really dont want a NT with our first pick until we shore up the OL, WR, and CB positions.

You can say the same thing about Joe Thomas, Jake Long, Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, etc etc etc. You have no point. The same can be said of any position but QB, and even then sometimes.

i think panthers could trade from 14 to about 24 for a 2nd, 4th, and 6th somthing like that idk man......

Hmm, sorry man I was still in the Hurney mindset and thinking trade next years first to have two firsts this year...(bad idea bad idea I know now)

Just remember this when the Giants took JPP, DE wasn't a need and they had two stars already. They had needs at other spots on defense as well. A sleeper pick for us since Gettleman is here now is ezekiel ansah. He's similar to JPP in that he's a raw player but a freak athlete with nice size. He's shooting up draft boards and it wouldn't surprise me if that was a move made by Gettleman.

When the Giants took JPP there team was also much more solid that ours. So while DE wasn't their primary need, their primary needs weren't as much of a liability as ours are. Not really comparable, IMO.

They didn't have a mlb under contract and also had needs at dt, cb, ol and rb. The season before the Giants gave up the third most points in the nfl. They took him with glaring needs at lb and cb because he was bpa and a pass rusher.

MLB is the only area of superior need that you listed. The Giants had talented players at those other positions, but they had been ravaged by injuries in 2009. For instance you call CB a glaring need, when they had Corey Webster, Aaron Ross and Terrell Thomas as their top three guys. Not All-Pros, but not horrible either, they simply never got to play together because of aforementioned injuries. In addition, I'm guessing people immediately see the name Tuck and Umenyiora and think great pass rush, when that wasn't the case for a large part of the 2009 season. DE was actually more of a need for them than people believe, and it came down to them simply viewing both DE and LB's as needs, but preferring the talent available at DE.

Pending what we do with our current roster, WR and OL are top priority. Our d-line generated a lot of pressure last season and if we keep D'wan, we're fine for the time being especially given our rotations with Hardy & Alexander inside. I'd much rather look to the later rounds for a NT like that Geathers kid or something.

Then Mayock said something I seem to hear this time of year "4 cornerstones of a team are DE (pass rushers), #1 CB, QB, and LT (big guys).

To me, you take the LT. The LT protects the QB. Your current LT is in decline and is aging out. LTs are hard to find unless you draft in the top 15 each year; we do not expect that in 2014. While Joekel and Fisher expect to be gone, Lane Johnson will be in the mix. After the combine, I expect LJ to rise to a mid-first grade.

There are about 7-10 starting CBs in this draft. If you can get a Rhodes, Ryan, Poyer, etc, in the second round, you laugh about it because you just drafted 2 of the four cornerstones. You already had the other 2 (Cam and CJ).

What about G? Draft one later and sign a free agent. You cleared about $7-9 million to shop free agency, so sign a RG to a short contract and develop a RG;

What about DT? Draft one later and sign one in free agency. Glen Dorsey might flourish in a 4-3; give him a cheap, one-year deal. Detroit has a few that are leaving. We could bring in one or 2 for about $5m.

What about WR? This bothers me, but we have Smitty, Gettis, Lafell, Smitty, Adams, Pilares. Maybe the new OC and WR coach will find talent in what we have. IT is there. Nonetheless, I would watch the waiver wire.

Besides, they are not cornerstones. LT is one. LT, CB, and then G or WR. DT.
