Panthers renegotiated Jonathan Stewart’s contract

Damnnnnnn. Bye Dwill. We love you and you will be miss very much by Panthers Nation.

His contract was bad to begin with, I understand that's not Gettleman's fault but I don't understand this move. If anything it makes the deal even worse, not better.

You gotta figure DWill is gone June 1.

34 will tear the AFC a new butthole running out of the Patriots backfield.

It will be good to see him mow down the Broncos in the Playoffs.

Right but he was very rarely the starter. The first time he gets the starting nod this year he goes down so he is an injury concern. He's a good back, he's just dinged up so much his first step acceleration looks slow at times. Maybe this last set of surgeries fixed it. I agree it made no sense to keep both backs, there's not enough carries and we have some glaring needs. Giving 2 backs 7 to 10 carries a game hurts them both. With the restructure(what did that save?) it's obvious who's staying, we will see how it works out. I would have traded either or both backs for a #1 receiver at this point anyway. I hope both backs kill it this year.

He was the primary RB in 2011.....more snaps than Williams. Williams was starter in name in 2011.

He played more snaps than Williams in 2011, 2010.

He might of logged more snaps in 2009 as well....I will have to double check that one.

Yeah, the Patriots are going to overspend on an old RB after leading the NFL in rushing TDs with cheap RBs.

Chipping away at his future years is a decent idea, Gettleman can do the same thing next season and chip away a bit more on his future years. There is no forcasting what future RB contracts might be, if Stew does good he can become potentially a bargain, if on the otherhand he sucks, we can cut him for perhaps below market value.

Dwill's pockets will be stuffed with Hurney's (Our) dollars when he leaves Charlotte.

What's left is winning, he'll be a bargain for a chance at a Lombardi.

Teams will probably look at the 14 games he played against teams not named the Saints.

A team with a strong rush attack and up and coming RB....that is all fairly cheap.....like NE.....has no reason to look at him.

According to Panthers.com DWill averaged 4.3 ypc with 5TDs, while Stew did 3.6 with 1TD. Winner DWill. Stew averaged 9.2 yards per catch with 1 TD, while DWill had 14.3 with 2TDs. Winner DWill. A down year for both, but DWill still was close to avg.

Oh and DWill's longest run of 65 yards is triple Stew's 21. Again, winner DWill.

Too bad he costs so much.

Stew ain't bad. He just isn't a homerun hitter like DWill.

Also, there was a linked article on here recently that said DWill had more yards after contact that Stew. So that myth is also busted.

Personally, I would rather have DWill on this team. If that works out, great. If it doesn't, we still have, cough cough, Stew and Tolbert. Still reliable backs. Just not the threat DWill is. And I believe you need all the threats you can get in todays NFL.

I think the Broncos are a strong possibility. Deangelo's best years were wth Fox. He gets a shot at a title. The Broncos were reportedly interested in trading or him before. McGahee got injured last year, then their number 2, which hurt them in the playoffs. And Fox likes veteran back. At this point I just want him to go get 20 carries a game somewhere good and light it up so these guys ripping him for things that were beyond his control can have some crow for Thanksgiving.

Obviously thinking outside the box here, but all the semantics just performed on Stewarts contract, did it by chance make it more attractive now to other teams for a possible trade? Didn't seem to change the world as the Panthers are concerned, just wondering.

    • Would Morgan or Beason have been HOFers' if injuries hadn't derailed their careers?  I was not a close watcher of the game when Morgan was in his prime but I thought Beason had a few seasons at close to Lukes' level of play.
    • Franchise QBs feast when things are rolling and the tide that raises boats when things are going sideways.  Bryce isn't that. He's a complimentary player, that's it.  When the defense and STs are on point, he plays loose and it shows.  When we are in a dog fight and things haven't gone our way, he struggles.  It's that simple. He's not a horrible QB, but he's not top tier either.  So the question begs, is this worthy of a second contract?  The answer should be no.  It definitely is my answer. Bryce will never be a QB that can produce wins largely on his arm.  That's a FRANCHISE QB, any other QB is simply a placeholder at the starter's position until that guy can be found.   At some point the excuses of lack of weapons will be a straw man.  Heck, it's nearly there now.  I mean if he doesn't look even better than last year will we blame it on the TE position?  'Well if Bryce only had a player like Kelce, Kittle or Gronk on this team...'  Are we really going to do that?
    • When I arrived at college, I was 18, not too much younger than some of these draft picks.  It was not a huge school, but there were guys on the team who were 21, 22, 23....playing ahead of me.  I was seventh on the depth chart.  Those guys have been through a few seasons, were stronger, more knowledgeable.  I was a better raw player than some of them, but those other factors matter.  As I grew stronger, more familiar with the playbook, and learned what it was like to play in college, I gradually improved and with that, I rose up the depth chart.  It took most of my freshman year for the light to come on.  Had the coach thrown me into the starting lineup day 1, I would have probably failed.    And that was college.  So I agree with you based on my experience on a much lower level.  Frankly, I think that is why so many kids drafted to fill huge gaps bust.  The teams are desperate.  Anyone who looks to fill vacancies in the starting lineup through the draft is desperate.  You draft depth to develop.  For this reason, I say, "Let Walker start for a while."  Maybe Brazzell can be our WR 4.  Throw Hunter into a rotation and ask him to do one or two things.  Freeling needs some strength and he needs to work on run blocking.
