Once Gamble is Cut, Cornerback Becomes Our Biggest Need

As it's becoming more and more obvious that Chris Gamble is not going to be a Panther next season, I feel like this had to be stated. Whether you agree or disagree about it being our biggest need, I think it can be agreed that it is a hole that's going to need to be filled.

So what do y'all think we do? Does Gettleman show some of that personnel savvy and pick us up a cheap free agent? Do we address this in the draft? And if so, when? 1st round? 2nd? 4th? 5th? With Milliner likely going before pick #14, are there any other prospects that could be the BPA at that pick? Rhodes? Banks? Trufant? Or do we try to find one of those guys at pick #44 or beyond?

gamble is a player we can move away from and barely notice. he's not a difference maker. we're not any better or worse of because of him being on or off the field.

it's not any more of a need than it was before.

That's crazy talk. Our pass defense is better with Chris Gamble on the field. The only reason we didn't get thrown all over in the second half of the season was because the D-Line was on fire. I would not feel comfortable going into the season with Munnerlyn, Norman, Thomas, Dockery and some late rounders / UDFAs as our lineup in the secondary.

We have so many needs that I have forced myself into putting blind in faith in Josh Norman,Josh Thomas, and James Dockery since we survived without Gamble when we finally turned it around and started winning.

I defended Hurney many times but now the more I analyze our cap situation and the major whiffs he had when trading future picks I am starting to think I was just being a homer.

if we improve our front 7 our DB's will instantly become better.

when was the last time Gamble played any way?

Yeah, that logic holds as long as we have Hardy and Johnson going up against bad O-Lines like San Diego's. The minute we go up against any type of stout line, where out tackles can't collapse the pocket and the ends only break contain every second or third play instead of every down, we're going to get thrown on for 500 yards.

How many games did we win without Gamble in 2012?

How many games did we lose with Gamble in 2012?

I think this is an overly simplistic view.

We won games late in the season because the D-Line came on like crazy, and more importantly because we moved away from the read option and back to a more traditional pro-style offense.

We did not win more games later in the season because Chris Gamble got injured, or because of the play of our secondary.

No one is denying it isn't a need. Its just we need help at WR, OL, Safety, and Corner. Which one of those do you think is the most important right now? It isn't corner to me. It's helping Cam with a WR or shoring up the Oline. I've heard talk of drafting a safety in the first. I hope that is not the case, as with corner.

    • So what about their sign is not compliant or causing the issue according to the rules? Them always having it, or the amount of time they have had it, or their loyalty to the team is not relevant to this situation. To be clear, I know next to nothing about this situation, just trying to clarify.  I have no dog in this fight and am emotionless on this topic. If you are breaking a rule, you do not get special treatment just because you have been here breaking it a long time.
    • The team fell for that late season averageness he displayed last year and got burned. You want to do that again? I don’t.  But I sort of do agree that we are stuck with him as the starter.  I can’t decide whether replacing him gets us into the playoffs so suffering through one last season is the price for freedom in 2026.  Three ways to be free in 2026: He actually plays like a real NFL QB,  The team sends him packing. Be completely out on tne Panthers until changes are made.
    • Short version = these people have had those seats since the beginning and haven't missed a game. They have always had their sign. They had to change the sign - I think in 2015 when Cam ripped that Packers fan's banner down (love him for that, by the way) - to be compliant and haven't had any issues in the last 10 years. The Panthers even used a photo of them and their sign in their album from the Falcons game. In the 3rd quarter last weekend it was decided that the sign needed to come down. Seems weird and unnecessary, especially since it has been there for every game for a decade.   EDIT: they've had it since 2003. Still a long-ass time.... Also "cringe" is a funny word for someone over the age of 18 who lives and overshares on the Huddle. But, ok....
