Gross's new contract voids in 2014. OT now moves up priority list

Yeah but it saved money for this year. That's the whole point of the thing, it allows them to keep Gross while simultaneously saving money for this year.

Your options were either not to free up money this year and keep Gross, or outright cut him this year and pray to god we could fill his spot.

Could have kept him at the original deal and cut Williams and/or a couple of guys that suck to get enough savings to get money for the Draft picks and a FA or two. The team was already strapped for cap next season as it was, cutting Gross with only a minimal hit of 1 or so Million would've pretty much fixed the issue and gave the team money. Now Gross isn't going to be here and he doesn't save the team all that much money by getting auto released by this deal. Heck the team could have played him both seasons, cut Williams and another player or two and saved more money and been in a better position to groom a new LT.

There was much better ways the team could have saved this money, this deal just boggles my mind.

Now the team is in a bind and has to get a LT in this draft that will be ready in 2014. There's only a couple of those guys in this draft. The team won't have the money to go after a FA next year nor should they be in position to draft one that would be ready to start immediately.

Now the question becomes how does Carolina move up into the top 10 for the LT prospect they so desperately need with no move up ammunition really.

G-man does it again. If we can draft a top LT, then Gross moves to the RT spot. If not, we draft right side OL this year and left side next year. Either way its a win. I can see maybe one or two more free agents brought in. One of which will be for the O-line.

The second one perhaps a vet TE or WR. It is time to start getting excited. Best move so far is bringing in Getttleman.

This isn't a win for Gettleman and the Panther's.... not in any way shape or form, they have to take a LT this year now which most likely will mean trading picks to move up into the top 10. Only way this works out in the Panther's favor is if Johnson or Fisher drop to them at 14.

The Panther's should in no way shape or form be in position to draft a LT next year that can come in and play LT year one. If they can it means the team went 4-12 or something like that this year. The team isn't going to have the money to bring in a viable LT player through FA either in the next two years.

What are you talking about? Restructured deal or not, we need a replacement. Either next year or the year after. You said earlier we could just cut Gross next year instead of the restructure, but the restructure is making it sound like he is going to retire after this year. So were in the same boat either way.

That's a bit extreme. We don't HAVE to draft a LT in the first round this year. Too much can and will happen between now and Game 1 2014.

Please drop your application off at BOA stadium ASAP. Gettleman obviously doesn't know what he is doing.

I will do so because this deal is stupid on so many levels. A savings of 4 million compared to a savings of nearly 10 million is the difference on next years cap. 10 million is a nice chunk of cap space that the team desperately needed next season.

These multiple conflicting reports are annoying as poo. Anyone on twitter who can ask the Joel Corry guy what the cap hit for Gross is in 2014 once deal voids?

5.6 million cap hit once the deal voids, if he would've been cut next year his cap hit would've been around 1-2 million at most.

Well, with Gross being a free agent in 2014 after his restructuring, the equation has changed. If one of the top 3 OTs are available at 14 then we should probably take him. I would take one anyway, but this should help sway some of you non-OT guys.

Nope. Worry about it next year.

The problem is the Panther's would've saved more money next year by keeping him on the old deal.

Yes, but we have to make the team better THIS year. If we don't have a winning record and make the playoffs, the poo hits the fan. Something had to be done to alleviate the pressure for this season, while also not being extremely detrimental next year.

Almost have to insure that the team gets one if Gross' deal auto voids, trading up... wasting a draft... so forth.. are all viable options now. The Panther's shouldn't be picking high enough next draft to be able to get one of the top LT's, so waiting is out of the question. Won't have the money to sign one in FA either, so team basically screwed if they can't get one of the three LT's in this draft..... IF Gross' deal does indeed auto void.

And you have a way to view the future how again...?

What can happen????? The team isn't going to be able to get one in FA, they shouldn't be in place to get one that can start immediately year one in next years draft either. That leaves this years draft with the team picking in no man's land for LT talent.
