Panthers release LB Onatolu

I wish there wasn't this looming uncertainty of health with our LB core. On paper it easily is a top 5 unit. With the injury history of Beas and Davis it can be worrisome at times. I do feel better however with Davis getting thru a full season and being able to strengthen that knee.

If their is a silver lining the league is going to more 3 and 4 wr sets so olb isnt a premium position. IMO.

wonder if he showed up for offseason workouts yesterday, and if he did, there was some issue that popped up. otherwise, yeah, roster move has to becoming. panthers have plenty of roster space, though.

He showed, up and staff said "dang you still here, Gettlemaaaannn!!"

Well sorta. Remember, any time you release someone it bumps a low contract player into the top 51 who otherwise wouldn't have counted against the cap. The real savings are probably in the 200-300 range. Anyone we signed would presumably move that person back off the cap to be replaced by their new cap hit.

So it works like this, in theory - Supposing we were at exactly our cap and we released Onatolu providing a true savings of around 300k, but we could still sign someone with exactly the same cap hit as before because it would push the new cap hit back off of our cap total.

True but on the flip side as soon as we sign someone else it pushes one if those bottom salaries back down and at the end iof the day when we cut down to 53, all 53 will count against the cap
