I can Finally forget the past 4 years and move on

Back in 2009 the company I worked for shut their doors in September. There was problems starting in June and by August they had stopped paying us. Went down to the Unemployment office after the first missed check to see if we could draw UE. Was told that we could not and that if we quit we would have to wait 4-6 weeks to claim. Two issues kept us there one company could have been sold and we would have lost our job and senority and two company could have gotten some funding. Very tough postion to be in. Grind it out with no pay and no UE for 4 weeks or quit and wait 4 weeks. Invested time and energy called for staying. Well that lasted 4 weeks and they finally shut the door and we was out of 4 weeks work plus vacation days. Good thing was the UE office made sure we had checks the next week. Bad thing was the checks didnt cover all the bills so it was time for cost savings mode and trying to cut some bills or work with the bank on the mortgage. While trying to find a job that paid somewhat close to covering the bills.

So after figuring up all the bills I was 500 in the red. Job prospect back in 2009 was lean to none. First on the list was to try to work with the banks. As soon as I was laid off I sent a request for modification on my loan. Month later rejected was told to try again did and still rejected by Febuary job market was still slow and no prospects on the horizon. Decision time had set it been almost 5 months and in that time frame I had exactly 2 interviews at jobs that would afford me to keep everything. Time to cut bait and move to a better fishing hole. Back then no one was hiring except for the goverment had been applying for everything I was qualified for and not hearing anything back. New that if I wanted to stay in my career field I would have to move and needed to insure I had enough money to make the move. Had a friend in DC so I made a couple trips up there as teh job market was a lot better than NC. Still no luck, Finally had to move out of my place to save money. Bank wouldnt work with me so had to let the place go into foreclosure. Finally in June of 2010 got a job in Michigan. Yeah hell in earth but I was working and getting paid. So worked there for a year and a half. All the while trying to find something better. Job market picked up in 2011 and was able to get some good interviews but no job offers. Finally in Nov 2011 got a offer to work in Hawaii. Jumped at the chance and havent regretted it once.

Which brings me to the closure. Finally received my back pay in febuary for most of the hours I worked in August of 2009 and just received a settlement for the foreclosure of my place in 2010. While I would much rather have kept the place I could not justify paying the mortgage when no job prospects was in site and still losing the place. Could I have taken less pay sure but I could not have kept the place. While working in NC it was 25% of my monthly salary. Not like I have been down since that time and not moved forward but it is nice to get a little justice for the past.

Good for you man.

I have had some tough up and downs the last 10 years, but there is one thing that I have learned from the tough times.

No need for massive amounts of credit or debt, and start saving for the next rainy day.....because it will come.

I am trying to build back up to having 1 year of living expenses saved up.

Keep at it.

Congrats Squirrel! I had fully intended upon coming in here and congratulating you on finally coming out of the closet, but this is obviously not the time for jokes.

Congrats on Hawaii. The wife and I are planning on visiting sometime in Sep/Oct. would be nice to link up at a bar with another fan and catch a Panthers game with a fellow fan. Let me know if you'd be interested and we can set something up. We're definitely going, just don't have exact dates. Again, congrats on getting out of your financial predicament.

Why didn't you just find another tree here?

I have a very specialized career field that doesnt transfer to good to other fields and to stay in it I had to move. Staying in NC was my first choice but their wasnt any companies in NC in that field.

    • Night and day difference in the front office investements.  Since Morgan has been in the FO (5 years)....4 out of 5 first round picks have been offensive players.  The one defensive pick was a corner. Expand it out to the first 2 rounds? 7 out of the 9 picks have been offensive.  That IMO is why our D sucks so bad.   You build defenses up front.   Carolina hasn't been investing there.  Ron's first 5 years? 3 of the 5 first round picks were defensive players.  Expand it all to include second rounders  7 of the 10 picks were defensive.  All front 7 players.
    • I think he gets this year to show what he can do.  Last year, we had a lot of injuries. This year, we should have some players, even if we lose one or two.  It's the first preseason game.  Some of the starters weren't even in it.  There is no scheming or game planning.  Let's see how guys do when it counts. I think we have a GM that knows a thing or two about defense.  Let it play out.
    • I was ok with the mentor aspect of keeping Dalton, but wow has he fallen off the deep end. The slow behind the WR interception was awful. I keep hearing our WRs created no separation, but on that particular play dude was wide open and Dalton couldn't get it to him with a clean pocket. Next year, we need to address the backup QB spot haaaaaard!
