Who would we have taken at 14 if Star wasn't there?

Have you guys heard anything on this?  We were very fortunate that Star fell to us obviously.  Do you think we would have gone Richardson (assuming the Jets didn't) if Star was gone?  What about Floyd?

I get the feeling we would have gone "hogmollie" even if Star wasn't there.

It would have been Floyd. Not even hard.

But assuming that if Star and Floyd wasnt there, it may have been Vaccaro or even Matt Elam.

Matt Elam said he was surprised that the Ravens took him. He was thinking the Panthers or some other teams were going to take him.

Everything being reported was Eifert and Rhodes were the other two being considered.

Take that for what it us worth

Eifert and Rhodes might have been the top guys going into the draft, but not during it. Even if Star were to be taken before 14, think it would be hard for the Panthers to pass up on Floyd.

But yea, considering Star and Floyd gone Eifert and Rhodes may have been our guys.

Most team's didn't have Floyd in the top 20 players of the draft, I highly doubt the Panther's did either. Since they had Short as a better Pass rusher then Floyd. I'd wager that the Panther's probably had Short over Floyd.

It's hard believing that. I'm sure the Panthers would have had Floyd right behind of Star if they knew both of them were going to be there at 14. I would think Floyd would have been projected higher than Short on Panthers' board even though Gettleman said he was the best pass rushing DT in this draft. That's what everyone GM say. Remember Idzik and the Jets said they were stunned bc they got two of their top 4 guys in Milliner and Sheldon. Hard to believe it.

No....it has been reported that Eifert and Rhodes were the other two guys being discussed in the Panthers War Room as possible picks if Star were not there.

As others have said, everything that has been reported has said either Eifert or Rhodes were the two options. Gettleman outright said we considered offense so there's that as well.

Would've been happy with either. Some of you get so obsessed with the supposed "genius" of trading down you don't see how many nice prospects were available to us.

I assume Floyd would also have been considered but that's tough to say for sure. We've had Short rated as highly as anyone for what has been quite apparently some time now. Considering the two are similar, we might have held off.

I know. I said you were right. I'm just saying that might've been the discussion not knowing Floyd was going to be there also. I would say that was the plan to take Rhodes or Eifert if Star wasnt there going into the draft. Once the draft started and Floyd begin to slip. I'd assume at pick 13 (jets) the Panthers would've consider Floyd higher than Rhodes and Eifert.

    • Like many of the old heads, I’ve been here for a long time.  I got a lot of respect for everyone on this board for your dedication to this team.  We’ve all been through it during the tougher years. At this point in life, I’m not one to judge anyone’s level of dedication, or their reasons why anymore.  Time, and a lot of bad football, will do that.  For me, it’s simple.  We share a common bond.  For that, I love and appreciate all of you crazy SOB’s. For me, last season was at a minimum, entertaining.  BY lead a young team to multiple come from behind 4th qtr wins.  That showed me heart, and that he has the clutch gene.  That’s the wildcard intangible.  For me, that was fun to watch even  if it was mindbogglingly frustrating at times.  Over the past two seasons, we have progressively built a better team around him.  On paper, the defense should be better this season.  That’ll help.  Let’s see what he can do as the other guys continue to develop too.  Besides, his contract is cheap for a few more years, and we just made some smart cap decisions during the draft. Let’s see how it shakes out.

    • I would very much liked to have seen Jake Delhomme's career if Tommy Jone no hurt Jake.  I just know that roster and the leadership were destined to hit paydirt but Jake was never the same after the elbow injury, and unfortunately he was the sole reason they didn't make it back to the big one.  I think that 08 team was the best in the league, and Jake masked his inability well all season til the Arizona game put it all on display.  I'll go back to the season prior even and say the 07 team was primed to be a competitor.  Jake was off to a fantastic start that year (for a Panthers QB).  They may have been a championship caliber club for a few seasons after 08 too.
