Best NFL Players Under 23 Per CBS

That means diddy squat. He wasn't drafted fifth overall for STs. Peterson was drafted that high to be a shutdown corner. In two seasons, Patrick hasn't accomplished that. Both Champ and Revis made an impact in their sophomore seasons, what's Peterson's excuse? He had lousy performances against Seattle, San Francisco, Green Bay, St. Louis, Atlanta and Chicago.

Yep, and you didn't even mention Richard Sherman, a fifth round pick from Peterson's draft class. So far he's been a great STer, but he's been just solid from a CB perspective.

I really wouldn't think Luke would be that high on a list of the top guys under 23 (guess I thought Luck and Griffin were younger), but PP is the only one they put above him? Peterson has had some nice punt returns and is flashier, but I think Luke definitely has a case for number 1.

Not sure how it's a discredit to PP that he is a great returner. Adds to the value he has as a player.

This is true, but so far he hasn't quite lived up to expectations as a corner (though I admit I didn't realize he had 7 interceptions, so I'm not trying to completely disregard his talent). The return ability is a great asset, but it's not the reason he was drafted.

It'd kind of be like if Luke ended up being a good LB, but he really shone as a Special Teams superstar after 2 years in the league. Is it a nice thing to have? Of course, but you'd hope your top 10 investment could be one of the best at his position. Maybe Peterson reaches that point, but other young corners like Sherman and even rookie Casey Hayward are putting up similar numbers without the lofty expectations that Peterson had.

Per CBS Sports' Pete Prisco, Luke Kuechly is #2:

Not bad but I think he should be #1 but that's not being a homer or anything. Glad he is getting the recognition he deserves.

One could argue that having good DT's in front of him would have decreased his total number of solo tackles.

I would tend to agree with this, if and only if, Luke didn't show the quickness and instincts to get to the ball carrier before the DT's can shed their blocks.  He really is quite impressive that way.

having your LBs lead the team in tackles isn't a good thing.

having them lead the league in tackles is a bad thing.

i mean sure, it means you've got stud LBs, but it also means your defense isn't very good at all....esp. the guys in front.

i thope that is different this year.

NaVorro Bowman was second in the league in tackles so I guess the 49ers defense is bad???
