Extending Greg Hardy now would be a big mistake.

If we don't sign him and he has a great season, we could be in jeopardy of trying to franchise him just to keep him next season.  Although I see the point in making him play one more season to earn it, i just think that avoiding a potential cap nightmare and solidifying the D-Line for the next 3-4 years would be a smart plan and allow Gettlemen to focus on improving other areas of the team.

Plus, we resigned CJ after one good year.  And we paid out the ass for it because he was a FA.  Waiting til Hardy is a FA will drive up the price just based on the competition.  If we can say "look at what Avril and those guys got" and say those were guys with a year or two more production, lets take 5% off of that I don't see how Hardy's agent can balk.  That would be a STEAL for him for the long term.  If I had to guess I wouldn't think the market will go any further down next year than it was this year.  It was pretty low.  Definitely a buyers market.  Better to get it done now than wait til next year when A: the market will more likely go up than down and B: we have to compete for him.

i think it will go down, tbh.

funds will still be limited (b/c the money from the tv deal will still be about a year away and the cap won't be moving up much) but the market will be a whole lot more crowded than this year because of all the players that signed one year deals hitting the market.

you think it was flooded this year? wait until next year.

With all of these QBs making north of 15 million a year, it is going to be interesting to see how other players are affected.

With Hardy, the Panthers have all the cards. With the franchise tag, NFL teams usually have the leverage. The exception are elite players, but Hardy isn't obviously in that category.

Solid franchises like the Pats and Steelers never let any single player get the upper hand, even if it means letting a guy walk. I hope the Panthers start acting like this.

Yeah, let's wait and let the price go up.

I agree, but I see both sides.  However, Hardy has been developing in one direction and he blossomed last year.  He is worth the gamble, if you ask me.  We get him at a 25% discount if we lock him in now.  Later, after a good season based on better DT play, we might have to franchise him and then try to lock him down.  Once you do that, the frachise tender comes into play.  We do not want to pay the franchise tender for a 4-3 DE.

By NOT re-signing him now, we are basically betting that he will not have a good 2013.  If he does, can we afford both Johnson and Hardy?  If he has a poor 2013, we could decide that Alexander is the better option and let Hardy walk.  So, we cannot sign him if he plays well and we will not sign him if he doesn't.

What is it about Hardy that suggests he will not continue to develop?  When do smart people buy stock?  Same thing.  I am with ya, CatMan72.

grow up--most everyone here is getting tired of ignoring people who get off insulting others behind a fake name and childish insults. Shouldn't you be in school? I hear its Taco day.

Should I post a thread about how we shouldn't sign Greg hardy? Would that be more mature?

And don't tell someone to grow up and then use a teenage level insult like "shouldn't you be in school brah?!"

It sure is.

I am guessing (if Cam plays well, and i think he will), that in a couple years, Cam will be in the $21 million range.  If we have 2 DEs making over $11 million each, that is a third of the cap.

Fortunately for us, we can find the $$ at RB.

I would not have a RB on a second contract.  Period.

I would put the non QB $$ into a #1 WR and a #1 CB, a LT and the DL.  I would also make sure my MLB is solid and paid, if he is a 3 down guy.  The next tier of salary would go toward a S, #2 WR, the rest of the OL.

RBs would not be rich men on my team.

You have seen what can happen.  Look at Flacco's contract.  They gambled on not extending Flacco before the season and he had an epic performance and the Raven's had to seriously pay the man

Unless the coaches are planning on rotating Hardy out enough to not inflate his numbers, I do not see waiting a viable option.  With the improvements to the interior D-line, he is going to put up some good numbers again.

But, it is all a gamble.  That is why they get paid the big bucks to make the decisions

It is a tough gamble on not extending a player like Hardy going into his contract year.  As well as him and CJ finished last season and vastly improving our D-Line through the draft, the writing is on the wall for Hardy to only build on what he showed last year.  Signing him now could prove to be one of the best cap decisions we make if he can play to his potential for the next 2-3 years.  If we don't sign him and he blows up, we might have to break the bank to keep him long term or even franchise him.

I personally just don't see him taking a step back with the talent around him that just wasn't there last year...Star, Short, and Beason

Everyone against extending Greg Hardy ask yourselves this.

How many 24 year old 10+ sack guys EVER hit the free agent market?

Seeing as how Gettleman loves his hog mollie terms.. how do you think a 290lb DE who can play tackle fits into it.

Do you honestly believe that we can plug...lets say Frank Alexander in and get the same production?

With our secondary do you really want to subtract from the Defensive Line?

Do you think franchising a DE...should be around 12 million next year is good or bad for the cap situation?
