Extending Greg Hardy now would be a big mistake.

Recommended Posts

Should I post a thread about how we shouldn't sign Greg hardy? Would that be more mature?

And don't tell someone to grow up and then use a teenage level insult like "shouldn't you be in school brah?!"

Just don't read the thread--why do you think you have to be an ass?  Is that your calling in life, the only way you feel significant?.  After insulting the person who started a thread about the Panthers without contributing in a meaningful way,  I simply estimated that you are about 12.  Anyone older than that would not have found your post funny or insightful.  Basically, this is not a place for dicks to practice their craft. Personal attacks are not welcome here and you should be reprimanded or banned (that is like a time out) for doing it.  If you are a Panther fan, go the Falcons site and attack their fans, brah.  If not, grow up and contribute meaningful content.

It's a tough decision, no doubt, but I think emotion is getting in the way of business.  Hardy is one of my favorite players on this team, he has it all.  Power, speed, athleticism, passion, motor, etc.  to be an elite DE.  Combined with the ability to slide all over the line, he makes himself a true Gettleman kind of defensive lineman, IMO.  That being said, you have Big Money on one side, two potential stud interior linemen, and Alexander (who was a value pick much like Hardy, though not as good) sitting in the trenches.  Hardy should blow up with the additions of our draft picks and a second season of Kuechly, and I'm sure he will get paid properly.... though not CJ money.  I just think of the Beason contract, the Morgan contract and many others where you toss the money out pre-season, and then are left licking your wounds if God forbid they get hurt, and hoping they return to form, while your money is tied up in a cloudy situation.  Getts just came in and cleared the books of albatross contracts like a ninja, and I think in year one of his reign, would be hesitant to put big money out there for what really is one year's worth of production.  That being said, I know Hardy was a first round talent that has lived up to what he was supposed to be on the field and I personally want him here for the long term terrorizing the NFC South.  I think Gettleman has this attitude/confidence/personality that players feel comfortable with and as long as we stay in touch with his agent ensuring that Hardy is wanted here, I think we will be fine.  It's business and players, on some level, understand that.

Everyone against extending Greg Hardy ask yourselves this.

How many 24 year old 10+ sack guys EVER hit the free agent market?

Seeing as how Gettleman loves his hog mollie terms.. how do you think a 290lb DE who can play tackle fits into it.

Do you honestly believe that we can plug...lets say Frank Alexander in and get the same production?

With our secondary do you really want to subtract from the Defensive Line?

Do you think franchising a DE...should be around 12 million next year is good or bad for the cap situation?

i would be pissed if it ever got to a point where the franchise tag was needed.

my guess is, esp. with the market being the way it is, that gettleman would just let hardy walk if it got to that point.

First of all, 8 users pie'd that comment. Would you like to let them know that you think they're 12 too? Because I'm sure they would all really give a flying fug what you think.

Second, don't tell me what to do on an Internet message board lol, what are you a fugging kindergarten teacher? Wanna give me a timeout and a spanking because I called my classmate fat?

And do you honestly think you're contributing meaningful insight by trying to act superior over me right now and cluttering this thread with a lame ass Internet fight? How dumb can such a mature adult like yourself be??

It's way to fuggin early to be getting bitched at by someone who isn't paying me or giving me pussy, so why don't you go back to contributing your meaningful insight and taking life too seriously, k brah?

Stupid thread = stupid comment

With all of these QBs making north of 15 million a year, it is going to be interesting to see how other players are affected.

With Hardy, the Panthers have all the cards. With the franchise tag, NFL teams usually have the leverage. The exception are elite players, but Hardy isn't obviously in that category.

Solid franchises like the Pats and Steelers never let any single player get the upper hand, even if it means letting a guy walk. I hope the Panthers start acting like this.

The Panthers have all the cards now.  Next year, Hardy will have the advantage with us having to compete with other teams.  Using the franchise tag on him with our cap the way it is wouldn't be responsible.  The franchise tag for a DE is one of the highest numbers.  I think only QB is higher.

I do not get the logic of locking up Hardy now for a long term deal. Yes he had a breakout year last year but im very much against extending a player that has only had one good year. I keep hearing "well if we wait until next season, he will cost more because he will match or exceed last year's perfrmance." Sure, its a possiblity. But its also a possibility he under performs and we can sign him for a reasonable amount.

Not only that but even if he does outperform, im still not sure I would want to pay him big money. With Dwan, Short, Star and CJ, its not hard to have just a average player at DE come in and look like a force. If Frank Alexander has a solid performance I say it might be worth it to let Hardy walk and continue on with big Frank.

I would rather err on the side of extending him now and take the risk that he was a one-year wonder then err on the side of waiting and having to bid against other teams and pay a premium later to retain his services.

For many players, the contract year is the best year of their career - so there is no guarantee that he won't tank after having a great season this year and getting a huge contract from us.

Of the two worst-case scenarios, extending him now would be a much less expensive mistake.

any way you look at it, this year would be cheaper than next....unless he tanks next year, which i don't see happening, tbh.

The 2nd side I haven't seen anyone bring up is:  What if Hardy doesn't want to sign an extension because he is hoping for max money.  We know he loves the Panthers and is a great teammate but that doesn't mean he won't gamble on himself to force a big contract.

The panthers have a pair of aces.  Hardy has an open ended straight.   At the very least we have to put a high tender on him.

However he has these things in his favor

Team wise:

He has improved every year.

He has made a jump in his third year (which most people expect the jump to happen).

He is 24 years old

He is 290lb can play both inside and outside.

He is very good against the run.

He is probably the crazy on our defense. (everyone team needs the crazy guy).

NFL wise.

At 290 he could probably play the end on a 3-4 team.

Everyone needs a DE.  Hell in our own division the Falcons or Saints would love..I repeat love to snap him up.

He has no major injuries last 2 years (other than motorcycle incident before training camp 2 years ago).

He is 24 years old(yeah I mentioned it twice).

The Panther cards are:

They can pay him this year.

We can franchise you.

We can place a high tender which would (discourage) some teams from signing you.  However if you told teams give me a first and 3rd pick for a 10+ sack 24 year old DE they would gladly give it over.

This could very well be the case.  If his number is too high then we have no choice but to wait him out and see what the market offers him.  I really don't want a bidding war to happen but in a year or so our cap situation could change dramatically.

So let him walk without getting anything for him?  You think that's a good move?

what would you get for him?

not much. a player in a contract year teams would rather just take their chances and let him hit the market.

people keep on whining about letting peppers leave without getting anything in return (even though we picked up a 3rd round comp pick), but the reality of it is there was very little chance that anyone would have given us anything of significant value for him. tagging him was a mistake. we got nothing out of it.

letting him go when it was obvious he didn't want to be here isn't an attractive option, but it was the cheapest one and it would have allowed us to spend money helping other areas.

gettleman isn't a guy that will play around. if a player isn't willing to cooperate, he's going to cut his losses and move forward. that's the way that makes the most sense.
