Steve Smith looking forward to WR Competition. Cutting of Keiser lit a fire.

When fixing the Hurney mess you can't do it all at once. I honestly believe Gettleman did exactly heat he said in picking what he believed was the best available players. You can debate who you think was best available if you like. Gettleman is thinking for the long haul. In 4 years you will accurately be able to assess his approach.

I don't necessarily think that you can argue with G-man's approach based on just this one draft (as you probably well understand). Even in four years, no one is going to be thinking about 2013 (unless We missed out on the next coming of Megatron which isn't likely), we will probably be debating later drafts---particularly the one where we draft Smitty's successor. Personally, I hope we aren't debating WRs at all four years from now, but loving who we have.

Training camp is going to be great this year. For the last two years it has been relaxed. Too relaxed. Lots of joking around going on.

Running up that hill will be at the utmost importance. I expect wind sprints.

The key word is "seems".  LaFell can easily not play himself out of the WR2 position, if he doesn't "bring it" this year.  And that's during TC, pre-season, and during the regular season. He can fool himself if he wants, but he shouldn't be too comfortable regardless of what people may glean from this article.

BTW, I wouldn't say that LaFell is "hated", as much as he may be underappreciated. His disappearing acts won't make G-man or many Panthers fans mistake him for John Cena (if you know what I mean... You can't see me)

No it's locked up. If you heard Smith on radio it is understood the competition is for the 3rd thru 6th spot at WR.

Competition breeds players stepping up and developing faster. I love the fact that Smith is the one who is saying this because (he holds no punches) so you know this is a real feeling he has. I also like the statements of new players saying "they are going all out for spots" and incumbents saying 'they aren't giving up spots".

James Anderson was a meat and potatoes guy at $15.99, while Thomas Keiser was a meat and potatoes guy at $1.99.  It made sense to quit paying the premium, but unless there is a viable replacement on the dollar menu out there, I still don't see why you'd give up such an adequately priced meal when you're hungry and in a jam.  G-man must know something that we don't because after our starters (and rotational guy) all I see are a can of shoestring potatoes and a pack of Slim Jims on the bench for damn near the same $1.99.

Keiser did not fit what Gettlemen likes to do on the DL.  He was a small DE/LB tweener.

We are stacked at LB....and Gettlemen likes his DE's bigger and stronger.

Keiser is a good player and an effort guy....just was not the right fit for the scheme.

I think Mad Hatter did a better job of saying what I meant to say.  It may have been assumed that Keiser would at least get to compete based on his prior production and just being on the team, but that clearly isn't the case anymore, be it Gettleman's and Rivera's personnel philosophy, the new expectation in general, or both.

I agree 100%.

We definitely need to think about life after Smitty.

Hell, if Star had been off the board...I would have LOVED taking Hopkins with the pick. He was the only WR I liked in the first.

Watch out for my guy Hopkins

As much as I liked Smitty's comments... one thing that I surprised me was the one stating WR and DB competition is fierce and no one was safe. I would hope that all spots have this philosophy, not just those two groups.

I'm pretty sure it is, and he's just mentioning those in particular, but it does make me wonder.

I think these two are up for more competition because the guys competing all all young guys. No "real" incumbents among any if them.
