Saints Player Victor Butler tears ACL

New defensive coordinator Rob Ryan brought outside linebacker Victor Butler to the New Orleans Saints from the Dallas Cowboys with the hope that Butler could emerge as the team's best pass rusher. Those hopes were dashed on Tuesday.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that Butler tore his anterior cruciate ligament during Tuesday's organized team activities after a collision with running back Mark Ingram. Larry Holder of The Times-Picayune first reported the news. It's a brutal blow for a player that we thought could break out in 2013. It's also devastating for the Saints, who badly needed the pass rush help.

Butler was one of the four players competing to be Ryan's "Jack" linebacker in 2013. That's essentially the glamour position in a 3-4 defense, the position that gets the most opportunities to record big sack totals. We thought Butler was the favorite for the role because of the explosive skills he showed when given the chance with the Cowboys.

Martez Wilson, Junior Gallette and Will Smith remain as candidates to play the "Jack" position this year. This all but ensures all three men will be on the roster this season.

    • Not sure how much he was a long term piece of this team.   Sucks to not have him as part of the rotation.   Looks like it's Lee Hunter time.
    • This post was an error. Oops and sorry for the errors in the previous one. Too slow to edit.   We’ll see what they do.
    • I am not sure he will put the over the games but we’ll probably have them.   Two things I am thinking.  We have 4 preseason games.  All the coaches have enough service time to know the standards that are in place for decades. If I recall it was play your starters just a series to start woth and build it up until week theee where play a lot and you have week four to set hour roster. Evaluate before cuts.   Bevell will certainly have the whole thing down pat.   I’d they don’t do the fries and frie air will worry too. Because it is set up to do that.     I have said since they went t three preseason people have to figure a new way are still feeling it out and trying things.  We don’t have to this year.
